Suddenly a terrible explosion lights up the sky. Grabbing the camera, the couple flees as approaching police cars speed toward the scene. Five years later, the crash of Flight 800 has been attributed to a mechanical mal-function. But for John Corey and Kate Mayfield, both members of the Elite Anti-terrorist Task Force, the case is not closed. Suspecting a cover-up at the highest levels and disobeying orders, they set out to find the one piece of evidence that will prove the truth about what really happened to Flight 800-the videotape that shows a couple making love on the beach and the last moments of the doomed airliner. There is something good about a story based on facts where you are never quite sure where the fact turns into fiction. It is so well fitted together that no-one would blame the reader for missing the joins. Add to this the basis of a possible conspiracy theory and the more you read the more the story seems true (we all like to believe conspiracies more than fact!). The conspiracy is something that has been around but you have never taken too much notice about it until you read about it here and you question if the book is non-fiction or fiction. Indeed, it could be either. This book then is written in true Dan Brown style.

You know how the story will pan out, or you think you do. Surely the main character cannot reach his goal as that would mean the ever present question of 'how true is this' would be lost at the very end giving you a great story but a silly ending. So, that leaves you unready for how it does indeed end in such a dramatic and clever way. The usage of the dates and how they are managed in the plot are very well done. (show less)

I half to admit, I just could not finish reading this book. It was much too wordy for me and took to long to move the story along...I do not need to know EVERY action that the character is taking...My friend said that this is not one of Demille's best books, so he told me how it ended. I am glad I did not waste time reading it cause I would of been very mad. It's a good thing my friend knows me well enough to know I wouldn't of liked the ending...However, he did recomment a couple of other books by Demille so I will not give up on him.... (show less)

Nelson DeMille uses words to make a living so he probably should recognize the power of the adjective “perfect.” So, when he says his son is the one who helped him come up with the “perfect” ending to his book “Night Fall,” it’s a pretty tough description to swallow. The ending is most certainly not perfect. Impossible to believe, perhaps. Insulting to a reader’s intelligence, maybe. Predictable? That the book starts largely in July of 2001 makes it pretty easy to guess where its “prom scene”... (show more)

The ending is most certainly not perfect. Impossible to believe, perhaps. Insulting to a reader’s intelligence, maybe. Predictable? That the book starts largely in July of 2001 makes it pretty easy to guess where its “prom scene” might take place. No matter … outside of the ending and the title (“Night Fall?” Really? What the hell does it mean?) this is typical DeMille, which is to say it pulls you along chapter after chapter and never gets put down for long. It’s fun, but you get the feeling it wants to be more than that and some of the more glowing reviews use other hefty adjectives, like “important.” Please. Fun, this is. Important? Not even close. I don’t usually read murder, mystery, detective, thrillers. This one is mild. Its not the writing style I enjoy and reads rather like a detective movie - which I do enjoy. As one reads one can hear the accent of the NYPD cop, see him munching doughnuts and groan over the corny cracks. But it is, nevertheless an enjoyable read.

A couple witness the crash of Flight TWA and inadvertently video it while they’re filming themselves making love on the beach. Five years later a New York cop tries to make sense of what really happened that evening. Naturally there is conflict between the NYPD and the FBI, there are ego threatening fights, a woman causes jealous rages etc etc. You may or may not guess the end but it is intriguing nevertheless. A light and entertaining read especially if American Detective Novels are your thing. (show less)
