Romeo and Juilet is, of course, the classic Shakespeare tradegy that begins with a feud and ends in suicide. The Folger edition does a lovely job, with vocabulary referenced and plot points written right in - if you're going to read Shakespeare, read it in Folger's.
"Two households, both alike in dignity,
In fair Verona, where we lay our scene,
From ancient grudge break to new mutiny,
Where civil blood makes civil hands unclean.
From forth the fatal loins of these two foes
A pair of star-cross'd lovers take their life;
Whose misadventured piteous overthrows
Do with their death bury their parents' strife.
The fearful passage of their death-mark'd love,
And the continuance of their parents' rage,
Which, but their children's end, nought could remove,
Is now the two hours' traffic of our stage;
The which if you with patient ears attend,
What here shall miss, our toil shall strive to mend." (show less)

No, it's a flop!

There really wasn't anything special about this play, IMHO. Shakespeare has other works that are far, far superior.

  • Shakespeare doesn't exactly float my boat, but this is Romeo and Juliet. As many times as you've experienced the mangled rehashing of this classic story, this is the original. With that in mind and a well-annotated printing in hand, have at it.

    I have the 1947 Yale Shakespeare edition. Too modern to be bowlderized, but the editor was too reticent to explain the bawdy jokes. Really - in the 20th century? For Ivy League students?

    Great

    I know it's the classic love story that everyone knows, but I really think it's worth reading. I read it in highschool and we "acted out" portions of it and I thought that really brought the story to life.

    Also... the Leonardo DiCaprio movie is great!!

    Accelerated romance

    It was always my understanding that the time frame for the love story is so accelerated so as to place more weight on each person's actions and to add to the out of control feeling of the story.

    That being said, in the real world I don't think such a time frame is a real possibility. I think it fits in the work but it is silly to think it can be compared to the real world.
