What is Un Lun Dun?

It is London through the looking glass, an urban Wonderland of strange delights where all the lost and broken things of London end up . . . and some of its lost and broken people, too–including Brokkenbroll, boss of the broken umbrellas; Obaday Fing, a tailor whose head is an enormous pin-cushion, and an empty milk carton called Curdle.

Un Lun Dun is a place where words are alive, a jungle lurks behind the door of an ordinary house, carnivorous giraffes stalk the streets, and a dark cloud dreams of burning the world. It is a city awaiting its hero, whose coming was prophesied long ago, set down for all time in the pages of a talking book.

When twelve-year-old Zanna and her friend Deeba find a secret entrance leading out of London and into this strange city, it seems that the ancient prophecy is coming true at last. But then things begin to go shockingly wrong.

Quote-left#4 Coraline. #3 Thief of Always. #2 The Neverending Story. #1 Un Lun Dun. Brilliant. Mind-blowingly genre-bending classic for the ages brilliant. If I could write a YA books like this one, I'd be doing a Fitzgerald after the Great Gatsby. When you've climbed Mount Everest, what else is there?

Did I mention that it's a brilliant book? Wow.Quote-right

Quote-leftI absolutely adore this book! It's technically for young adults, but it does NOT "dumb down" the reader whatsoever. It's extremely imaginative and unique. I fell in love with the characters...I couldn't put it down. I have gotten several other people to read it, and they love it also. It is probably my favorite book, and I am extremely picky and critical.Quote-right

Quote-leftA strong entry in a world different from both that of Perdido as well as of our own, Un Lun Dun is an imaginative and active exploration into Terra Incognita. Some wonderful images and a well-thought out world that seems organic and enticing. Next please?Quote-right

Quote-leftNot just China's take on Gaiman's NEVERWHERE, despite what the press might say. Actually one of the more captivating YA books I read last year. Not my FAVE Mieville book (that would be PERDIDO...), but great nonetheless.Quote-right

Quote-leftI think the book is a little overhyped though I won't deny that it is quite creative and fantastical. Imagine a discarded milk carton that behaves like a dog and is named Curdle. Cute.Quote-right

Quote-leftI LOVED this book! It was so extremely creative, and I can't wait to read another book about Deeba and all the amazing characters she meets along her journeys. What a fabulous story!Quote-right

Quote-leftenjoyed it in bits. the chapter about mr. spreaker is great. its a bit forced in parts, a lot of conscious twisting against the norm. it works sometimes, especially in the switching of protagonists. good fun. not on par with walter moers, but still good fun!Quote-right

Quote-leftA young adult / children's book but a fun read for adults, too. A young girl finds her way to un-london and has alice-in-wonderland adventures in a place that is reminiscent of New Crobezon in Perdido St Station.Quote-right

Quote-leftWild. Deeba's the coolest young heroine of scifi/fantasy since Meg in A Wrinkle in Time.Quote-right

Turn on all the lights and check under your bed. Things are about to get spooky in Trenton, New Jersey. According to legend, the Jersey Devil prowls the Pine Barrens and soars above the treetops in the dark of night. As eerie as this might seem, there are things in the Barrens that are even more frightening and dangerous. And there are monkeys. Lots of monkeys. more
