LOVE this story...one of my all time favorites, if not my favorite
This is one of my favorite books! Excellent history of the later revolution. You can skip the intercalary chapters and follow the story, but you miss perhaps one of the best explanations of this period of French history.
I have read and re-read this over the last 30 years, and look forward to reading it again.
A bit like Moby Dick or War and Peace- part exciting story and part boring encyclopedia.
Wonderful tale, skillfully woven. Was a bit put off at first by the elaborate digressions into political commentary on the times... but soon found that my lacking knowledge of French history was much improved by Hugo's rants! My only regret is that my French is so horrible that I couldn't read it in the language it was written in.
Great story, great characters, shame about all the pages of waffling - would have been great as one volume.
Possible the best book I have ever read. It encompasses so many things, it's ridiculous. READ THIS BOOK.
