The House of Night series is set in a world very much like our own, except in 16-year-old Zoey Redbird's world, vampyres have always existed. Not all of those who are chosen do. It’s tough to begin a new life, away from her parents and friends, and on top of that, Zoey finds she is no average fledgling. She has been Marked as special by the vampyre Goddess, Nyx. But she is not the only fledgling at the House of Night with special powers. When she discovers that the leader of the Dark Daughters, the school's most elite club, is misusing her Goddess-given gifts, Zoey must look deep within herself for the courage to embrace her destiny--with a little help from her new vampyre friends. I was skimming some of the other reviews of this book and was VERY surprised to find that people didn't enjoy this book. This was the first book I've read since Twilight that I almost couldn't put down. Yea I had some issues with it but the writing and the story were really interesting. But most important the characters were very likeable. Even the "bad girl" had something near the end that made you feel bad for her or question her motivations in doing some of the things she was doing.

Anyway I really liked it. I read the last 100 pages in a sitting. I enjoyed that she used the word/spelling "vampyre" which whether it was on purpose or not, made her idea of being marked to become a vampire easier to stomach.

One thing that stuck out and I showed all my friends at work... If you turn to Page 125, Chapter Fourteen, First Paragraph, Third Sentence you will see this: "Hanging from the ceiling along one side were weird life-sized manikins that reminded me of three-dimensional shooting targets." ...WHAT? Never in all my life have I seen the word Mannequin spelled that way. Now apparently that IS in fact an alternate spelling of the word but I showed at least 27 people and all of them looked at the book like it had lost it's mind. It took me about an hour to get past that page because of that. Funny, but distracting.

Someone else wrote about the "sexual things" in the book and while it was a little adult I guess, it didn't bother me and I kinda thought it was cool that they didn't "hide" that aspect of being a teenager. They do stupid stuff. Might as well put it there. Makes for a good story. If you wanna read a book with "too much sex" in it go read A Kiss of Shadows by Laurell K. Hamilton. THEN tell me this book is too much. (I'm barely halfway through THAT book and needed a break!)

One thing that stuck out... I wouldn't say it bothered me necessarily but the author(s) threw in their/her very blatent opinions of things. Example: Page 59 about 7 paragraphs down near the bottom of the page: "Yes, I was aware of the whole oral sex thing. I doubt if there's a teenager alive in America today who isn't aware that most of the adult public thing we're giving guys blow jobs like they used to give guys gum (or maybe more appropriately suckers). Okay, that's just bullshit, and it's always made me mad. Of course there are girls who think it's "cool" to give guys head. Uh, they're wrong. Those of us with functioning brains know that it is not cool to be used like that." Gee, tell us how you REALLY feel about it. It happens a lot right near the beginning where she gives her opinions on drinking and drugs and other sex thing if I remember correctly and it just gets to be a little bit much is all.

And to add to that they use the parenthesis A LOT to add in extra little thoughts. It's fine I guess but it gets to be a little distracting at times and there had to be other ways to add in thoughts without doing the ( ) every time.

One thing I'm still trying to decide if I like or not was the use of paganism in the book. The whole vampyre thing being done because you are chosen by the goddess to carry on her work. Then they have the full moon with the circle and calling of the elements and stuff. Once I got past the fact that THAT was what she was doing it was ok but I guess because I've been to a full moon ceremony before the writing of the whole thing got a little monotonous and her take is more fantastic than real ones so I guess once I got past that it didn't bother me so much.

All that being said I really liked the book. It left you asking enough questions and wondering enough things and being confused about enough that I can't wait to go pick up the next one. I'd almost consider buying it. I'm reading my books in the order they are due back to the Library so I will be reading The Luxe next, but not the point.

If you liked Twilight, I DO recommend this book because it's a different story but still has good relate-able characters. It actually kinda reminds me of Twilight meets Harry Potter because the House of Night is a school. I really enjoyed it. (show less)

I was hoping to read a book about vampires, apparently my rather high expectations was in for a disappointing dip once I started reading this book. Marked, is the first book of the House of Night series. It involves a great deal of Wiccan details and is a rather odd combination of Harry Potter & Twilight.
Vampiric witches???
The vamps or have this matriarchal society / group, and it feels as if the men are just there for ornamental purposes. It speaks greatly of Wiccan culture which is purely matriarchal. Other than a tame scene or two that involves drinking blood (donated blood as a matter of fact) from a cup and licking blood from certain body parts, sadly, there isn't much vampiric action going on.
Since book one is perhaps the tip of the iceberg for the series, I can't say that it is totally rotten, but, it felt a little cheesy in some parts.
Zoey who has a rather horrible home life is unexpectedly marked. While reeling from this change, she receives no support from her friends and family - I'm appalled by how her mother treats her. Looking for the support that her mother clearly could not provide, she then runs away to her Grandmother's house. After she accidentally hits her head and has a vision wherein she is given a task by the vampire oops it's vampyre Goddess, Nyx, she wakes up in the House of Night, a special school for vampires.
Interestingly enough, there's a hint of witchcraft (spells & incantations) which I think is an interesting idea. However, reading this book wasn't particularly "enjoyable" I don't know. The concept is interesting, like I said, Harry Potter meets Twilight. Zoey has this unique mark on her forehead, and she develops special abilities that is far too advanced for her stage as a fledgling- which means Zoey is the "chosen one".
There's also this abrasive character named Aphrodite who immediately hates Zoey, doesn't that just scream "Draco Malfoy"?
I guess that's the rules then, for every special and fantastic hero, there is an equal and opposite hackneyed villain.
I can't say that we can ever create a specific profile for vampires, considering that it would stifle the author's creativity if he/she sticks to the blueprint of other authors with regards to their own vampire tales, but I just didn't like this book as much - hopefully book 2 will improve my opinion - or not. I have mixed feelings about this book. I read the author's note at the beginning, and P.C. Cast thanks her daughter, Kristin, for helping her "sound like a teenager." Well...I have just recently left my teen years, and I don't think I ever spoke the way the characters do in the story. It was sort of frustrating because Zoey is supposed to be special and beyond her years, but at times she seems more like she's 11 rather than 16. Maybe I was just a mature teen, but I think the book would have been better if it was portrayed in a more mature way. Then again, maybe I should just stop reading teen novels =)

With that being said, I still could not put the book down. All the immaturity aside, there is still a story and a plot that makes you want to keep reading. I will definitely read the rest of the series, not only because it takes less than no time to get through a book, but because the first book was definitely a cliff hanger. There are way too many "What If's" to stop reading. I think this series has potential to get better and better with each book...like fine wine, it just needs to mature =) (show less)

This book was utterly unputdownable. I found out about it a couple of months back on a vampire romance for young adults website so I stored it to the back of my mind for future reference. Then ooh about a week or so ago I went into a comic book store which sells books as well and for the first time came across this book (as well as the sequel but I didn't buy it) so I thought what the hell I'll get it. It was absolutely amazing; much better than I thought it would be. The world that Cast and ... (show more)

It was absolutely amazing; much better than I thought it would be. The world that Cast and Cast created was not one I have come across before (and I read a LOT of vampire books). Some plots in the story you could see coming although there was quite a bit that took me by suprise. The way the authors portrayed the house of night students reminded me of average cliques in american schools which added a sense of normalcy to the whole AU environment. I can't wait to be able to go buy the sequel next weekend XD. (show less)

Marked from the House of Night series by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast it's an interesting story with special surprises. It reminds me of Harry Potter + Twilight + Mists of Avalon, but it's a good book though. If you love Twilight you'll like Marked too.

This was pretty good... I imagine it would appeal more to younger readers (and is targeted for them) but I enjoyed it and ran straight to the library for the sequel. I wouldn't buy them to keep forever and ever, but I sure do want to know what happens next!
I agree with Carlee Huddock on this review, though - they didn't really sound like teenagers (I'm 27). That's the danger of trying to sound cool - things like Maui Jim sunglasses are totally lost on me; I'd never heard of them, so describing them as "cool" doesn't help.
The whole "brown pop" phenomenon is obviously a trick so the Casts don't have to pick Pepsi or Coke, and Zoey's "way with vulgar language" is somewhat endearing but I worry it will get old.

    Zoey

    Is Zoey already a vampire?
Because in the first book, shes starts coughing and then when she wakes up she mark is covered in.
