One of our most distinguished thinkers argues that the "rise of the rest" is the great story of our time.

One of our most distinguished thinkers argues that the "rise of the rest" is the great story of our time.

"This is not a book about the decline of America, but rather about the rise of everyone else." So begins Fareed Zakaria's important new work on the era we are now entering. Following on the success of his best-selling The Future of Freedom, Zakaria describes with equal prescience a world in which the United States will no longer dominate the global economy, orchestrate geopolitics, or overwhelm cultures. He sees the "rise of the rest"—the growth of countries like China, India, Brazil, Russia, and many others—as the great story of our time, and one that will reshape the world. The tallest buildings, biggest dams, largest-selling movies, and most advanced cell phones are all being built outside the United States. This economic growth is producing political confidence, national pride, and potentially international problems. How should the United States understand and thrive in this rapidly changing international climate? What does it mean to live in a truly global era? Zakaria answers these questions with his customary lucidity, insight, and imagination. (show less)

This is an amazingly concise, elegantly written, informative, insightful... where do I stop; I love this book. I heard the audio version (unabriged) read by the author and it was terrific. This is an amazingly concise, elegantly written, informative, insightful... where do I stop; I love this book. I heard the audio version (unabriged) read by the author and it was terrific. I particularly liked his sections dealing with India (past, present and future). In the first paragraphs or pages, he's writing from a pre-economic crash framework (it was published spring 2008) so it might seem outdated but stick with it - the rest of the book is not compromised and his perspective will give any reader a sense of which way is up in today's world. The book is not huge - an advantage; it's manageable and a pleasure to read - so don't expect it to include absolutely everything in the world. But in this compressed (his journalistic excellence here) way, he provides a wealth of information that the reader can apply to other things going on, as well. If you just have time for one book about the global situation today, I recommend this one. (show less)

Fareed Zakaria is probably the most astute and insightful geo-political analyst in the media today. Fareed Zakaria is probably the most astute and insightful geo-political analyst in the media today. His thoughtful analysis and points-of-view are clear-eyed and pragmatic, without being simplistic. Instead of beating the typical drums of fear that America is in decline, he posits that the rest of the world is developing nicely and will elevate along with us. As this post-American world "rises," our obligation is to wield our current super power status benevolently and strategically to embed the governance and structures that ensure multilateral prosperity in a future world where there are multiple powers with great relative influence. His analysis of China and India are worth reading, even on a stand-alone basis.

    The two limitations are:
    1) It is written is a very newsweek-like style (hey, he is the editor of Newsweek International), and his intent isn't elegant prose. Nonetheless, he conveys much in what is a relatively concise analysis and recommendation.
    2) He limits the focus of his analysis primarily to China and India (perhaps making a case in point), wheras Brazil, Russia, and the oil rich nations are left on the sidelines. I suspect this was mainly to keep the book a manageable length for its genre.

Regardless, Zakaria delivers the best of what our media can be. My worldview was informed and enhanced thanks to this timely book. (show less)
