It’s a new school year, and Greg Heffley finds himself thrust into middle school, where undersized weaklings share the hallways with kids who are taller, meaner, and already shaving. The hazards of growing up before you’re ready are uniquely revealed through words and drawings as Greg records them in his diary.

In book one of this debut series, Greg is happy to have Rowley, his sidekick, along for the ride. But when Rowley’s star starts to rise, Greg tries to use his best friend’s newfound popularity to his own advantage, kicking off a chain of events that will test their friendship in hilarious fashion.

Author/illustrator Jeff Kinney recalls the growing pains of school life and introduces a new kind of hero who epitomizes the challenges of being a kid. As Greg says in his diary, “Just don’t expect me to be all ‘Dear Diary’ this and ‘Dear Diary’ that.” Luckily for us, what Greg Heffley says he won’t do and what he actually does are two very different things.

Since its launch in May 2004 on Funbrain.com, the Web version of Diary of a Wimpy Kid has been viewed by 20 million unique online readers. This year, it is averaging 70,000 readers a day. (show less)

I work in a bookstore and even though this series has been flying off the shelves, I never bothered picking it up until I started teaching as well. I'm watching so many of my students - of every reading level - reading the book that I had to see what it was all about. While a fast read for me, it was still enjoyable. Greg gets into so many different situations that it's hard not to laugh. Sure he seemed to use his friend Rowley, but for most of the book, I could see how a lot of kids could relate. There's so much drama! Maybe we're seeing the embellished version, as it is told from a kids point of view, but that's what makes it fun. I loved the cartoons drawn with each of the entries. It will definitely help encourage struggling readers because the pages just seem to fly by! (show less)

The series being so popular right now, it's hard for me to dislike a book that is encouraging so many kids to read. However, I was left with a bad taste in my mouth when I finished it. While some of the situations are funny and can be very relatable to kids, there is a general feeling of bad attitude throughout the entire book. The main character is constantly disobeying his parents and other adults in his life while being a horrible friend to those stupid enough to hang out with him. While some kids may be able to read this and feel the same way I do about the main character, I'm afraid others will think it's all very funny and try to act on some of his examples. I would be careful with who reads this series. Though I wouldn't ban it from being read by my students, I don't think I would let my own kids read it. (show less)

I think I went into this book expecting something like “”The Angry Clam” by Erik Quisling, and like most expectations, it set me up to be disappointed. Diary of a Wimpy Kid is a good book, but not brilliant and life changing.

The book follows the life of a middle school boy who reminds me of just how narcissistic and cruel children can be. The main character Greg Heffly finds himself faced with a series of everyday adventures and misadventures driven by some questionable decision making. The... (show more)

The story as a whole is nearly Kafkaesque, but in a way that I hope reminds us to cherish the small victories. It is FULL of irony and satire so light and dry that I worry some of this books audience wouldn't “get it” but I'm sure many will laugh warmly out of appreciation of the dry wit, and/or be caught up in reminiscing about their own childhood.

I'm left feeling that this book was merely great. (show less)

Hilarious and not just for boys, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has already been a huge success in America and across the world. Hilarious and not just for boys, Diary of a Wimpy Kid has already been a huge success in America and across the world. Originally published as a series of cartoons, it is now available in book format complete with illustrations and at least two more books are due to follow. The book introduces us to Greg Heffley, Greg is stuck in the middle wherever he goes, as he is trapped between an annoying younger brother and a sneaky older one and has also just started middle school, where he is not quite part of the popular set but not a complete loser. Greg’s trials and mishaps at middle school are hilariously recounted and are guaranteed to make you laugh out loud. This book will hold the attention of even the most reluctant reader as you will be racing ahead to find out what Greg gets up to next as he battles bullies, brothers, parents and teachers and attempts to become one of the popular kids even cashing in on his hapless best friend’s rising star. I would recommend this book to anyone male or female from 8 upwards, it’s a hoot (show less)
