The Cross of Christ
About the Book
"I could never myself believe in God, if it were not for the cross. . . . In the real world of pain, how could one worship a God who was immune to it?" With compelling honesty John Stott confronts this generation with the centrality of the cross in God's redemption of the world -- a world now haunted by the memories of Auschwitz, the pain of oppression and the specter of nuclear war.

Can we see triumph in tragedy, victory in shame? Why should an object of Roman distaste and Jewish disgust be the emblem of our worship and the axiom of our faith? And what does it mean for us today?
Now from one of the foremost preachers and Christian leaders of our day comes theology at its readable best, a contemporary restatement of the meaning of the cross. At the cross Stott finds the majesty and love of God disclosed, the sin and bondage of the world exposed.
More than a study of the atonement, this book brings Scripture into living dialogue with Christian theology and the twentieth century. What emerges is a pattern for Christian life and worship, hope and mission.
Destined to be a classic study of the center of our faith, Stott's work is the product of a uniquely gifted pastor, scholar and Christian statesman. His penetrating insight, charitable scholarship and pastoral warmth are guaranteed to feed both heart and mind. (show less)

Amazing.
This is a book that you have to read slowly and savor, to really think and pray through it as you read. Stott does a very thorough job at setting up the cross and the death of Christ historically to set up the context. He then plunges into the depths of why the cross was needed, what it achieved, and how it is to affect the lives of those of us who trust in Jesus. He presents varying views from church history, and biblically refutes the ones that are not in line with Scripture,... (show more)Amazing.

This book has greatly deepened my understanding of the cross, and most importantly, my love for Jesus. I'm sure I will read it again in a few years. There is just too much to grasp it all in one read.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants a deeper understanding of Christ and His cross. What more important thing in the world is there to understand than this? (show less)Already read

Biblically-rich and historically engaging, Stott's classic on the centrality of the cross --more specifically the vicarous, forensic substitionary atonement of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ on that crossfor us -- is a must read for any maturing Christian who wishes to lead a life about God and his glory he pleasures in. (your life isnt about you!)"
Thanks must be given to God for this man who has discipled, trained, and "gospel-ed" many a Christian --especially in this book... Thanks must be given to God for this man who has discipled, trained, and "gospel-ed" many a Christian --especially in this book--.Having read "The Cross of Christ", I now have a clearer idea of how much it cost God to pay for me and my wretchedness, I see more clearly how much God loves me. The more you see the love of God, the more you can receive the love of God and the more you receive it, the more Gods love in you will overflow in your loving your neighbor who --too-- is a precious image-bearer of this radical, loving God.
Bravo Stott! (show less)
