A NOTE FROM JEN LANCASTER:

"To whom the fat rolls…I'm tired of books where a self-loathing heroine is teased to the point where she starves herself skinny in hopes of a fabulous new life. And I hate the message that women can't possibly be happy until we all fit into our skinny jeans. I don't find these stories uplifting; they make me want to hug these women and take them out for fizzy champagne drinks and cheesecake and explain to them that until they figure out their insides, their outsides don't matter. Unfortunately, being overweight isn't simply a societal issue that can be fixed with a dose healthy of positive self-esteem. It’s a health matter, and here on the eve of my fortieth year, I've learned I have to make changes so I don't, you know, die. Because what good if finally being able to afford a pedicure if I lose a foot to adult onset diabetes?" (show less)

After reading many depressing and/or starkly edgy memoirs over the years for book club, this one, dealing with the author’s struggle with dieting, was a huge (get it?) breath of fresh air. Jen Lancaster’s raucous humor reminded me how to laugh out loud again, and every time I sat down with it, I felt like I was spending time with my best friend. How nice that I had it in paperback, so I could carry her everywhere with me for many unexpected moments of dishing! Dieting while writing a book about the process of writing a book about dieting is sheer genius (though if I were her, I might have chosen to write a book about something more fun, like the process of tasting every stout beer made in Ireland, or the quest for the best half-caf-double-shot mocha in Paris, but I guess that wouldn’t have been quite as intriguing to read. After all, the premise of this book is that she’ll lose weight in time for her book’s release, and that certainly carries more suspense than finding a satisfying drink), though the last few chapters sounded suspiciously like a commercial for Weight Watchers. Will she disclose her secrets of successful weight loss right here in these funny pages for all to emulate, or will she fall flat (fat) for her family and friends to mock mercilessly? Pick up your copy today to find out! (show less)

worst of her books in my opinion. I don't want to hear about her whining about her weight problems even though some people probably enjoy commisserating with her. although she is nasty and bitchy through it which still made me laugh. I'm a dedicated fan no matter what! (show less)

I didn't like "Bitter is the New Black," but for some reason, I picked up another memoir by the same author. I am glad, as this one was much better. While "Bitter" showcased a woman who had a ridiculous sense of entitlement to the world, "Pretty Fat" showed the growth (figuratively and literally) of Jen as a person, and what truly putting your best face forward really entails. Most women will be able to relate to Jen's plight with her weight struggles. Most of us dread getting started and look at the pretty, fit trainers as skinny spawns of satan. Like me, Jen does not seem to see in the mirror what everyone else sees in real life, and for that, she has never felt the need to apologize for herself or to anyone. She was always able to accept who she was, even when she was not feeling her best for it. But when reality stared down at her and warned her that long-term consequences could be looming, Jen decided to do something about it. And as a good heroine should, she made it clear she wasn't doing it for anyone except herself. This book is the right companion for women who want to lose weight, who need to learn to accept the good and the bad, and who want a friend to be there along the journey. (show less)

Pretty freaking awesome. There were so many times where I was just like "can I be her next best friend". I love the fact that she has confidence, that she only works to lose weight because its healthy (well mostly) that she is affected by society, but only to the point that we all are. in short, I love the fact that she's human! And WAY THE HELL FUNNY. I disagree with another reviewer though because I loved her footnotes. It made it a little odder to read, but so many of them where... (show more)

I really, really liked this, and am excited to read more. (Plus thanks to reading this book I know Jenny Craig=bad idea. Personal training...interesting).

My one and only beef about this book, is that if your reading it to find out how to lose weight, its very unrealistic on a class/economics scale. That being said, I'm still going to read much more by her. (show less)
