For the past six years, Matty has lived in Village and flourished under the guidance of Seer, a blind man, known for his special sight. Village was a place that welcomed newcomers, but something sinister has seeped into Village and the people have voted to close it to outsiders. Matty has been invaluable as a messenger. Now he must make one last journey through the treacherous forest with his only weapon, a power he unexpectedly discovers within himself.

Another beautifully-written story by Lois Lowry. The story centers on acceptance, selflessness, and sacrifice.

The Villagers all came to the Village with a need. They were accepted just as they were and were given new homes and a fresh start. Then selfishness came and caused trouble in the Village. They forgot the true purpose of the Village's existence, which is to provide a safe haven for the unwanted. In the end, it took one person's sacrifice to save them all from the claws of death.

This book definitely earns a spot in your library.

Reserve a space too for the other Lois Lowry books. :) (show less)

Matty was my favorite character in this book. But overall I didn't enjoy this book. There were just too many questions unanswered, it didn't feel complete. The only reason I rated it as high as I did is because Lois Lowry did a wonderful job developing Matty's character. I only highly recommend this book to anyone who has read the Giver and has questions on the ending of that book-- this book will answer them. But other than that, I think it would be difficult for a reader who has not read the Giver or Gathering Blue to care much for this book or its characters.. (show less)

This novel is the third in what has become a loosely based trilogy. It is not a trilogy that seems to be designed. Each of the preceding books can and does stand on its own. In this novel the characters are real and poignant each seeming to emulate a human quality. While well written, it does leave the reader asking questions about both the past and present of characters. What was Kira's life like in the village? What happened to Thomas? In this novel the characters are real and poignant each seeming to emulate a human quality. While well written, it does leave the reader asking questions about both the past and present of characters. What was Kira's life like in the village? What happened to Thomas? This story seems to beg for a continuation while wanting at the same time to end. There is closure, but not as much as there could have been. It was as though the story was forced to be in Matty's point of view when it may have been better put from a different perspective. Jumping to Leader's perspective and the Seer's was unexpected, but helpful, and would have been more so had it happened sooner. (show less)

This is a sequel to her other book, Gathering Blue, which is not information provided in the description. I had to read a little into the book to find the similarities in the characters and story lines. Overall, Lowry has an interesting imagination and delivers this story well, but left me begging for more at the end. The story ended too soon allowing us to leave the rest to our own imaginations.
