How can Americans understand this rapidly changing international climate, and how might the nation continue to thrive in a truly global era? Zakaria answers these questions with his customary lucidity, insight, and imagination.

With the US showing signs of overstretch, and the rise of the BRIC economies, the time has come for another assessment of the (probable) emerging multipolar world order. Unfortunately, Fareed Zakaria's latest would not be that book. It is marred by superficiality, fashionable Bush-bashing (some of it justified, most of it fluff for the Lattecrats), and naivete regarding China's long-term intentions as it emerges as a world power. The chapter on India is the strongest, due to Fareed's first-hand experience of said country, and worth skimming for insights into the Indian political and economic system, particularly for those unfamiliar with it.
Zakaria has retreated somewhat from the "hard" realism of his early writings, and there is, unfortunately, less of the skepticism of multinational institutions and NGOs that was characteristic of his earlier work. Such objections aside, this book is a major disappointment. Reads more like an audition for position of NSA than the comprehensive overview/analysis of the challenges of the emerging multipolar world. Better luck next time Fareed! Maybe your lack of an offer to join the Obama administration will bring you back to your senses. (show less)

It's not an anti-american book, all the contrary. The author is still admiring the american model and analyses how it could be updated to face the new challenges by the rise of "the rest of the world" - Great, and very optimistic.

This is an eye opening book about "the Rise of the Rest". Americans are giving up the superpower of this US with their own greed and lack of respect. It is very informative and quite shocking tot he every day US citizen.
