The Origin of Species
Set in Montreal in the 1980s, The Origin of Species tells the story of thirty-something Alex Fratarcangeli (“I can’t even pronounce it myself,” he admits to an acquaintance), plagued by a familiar sense of being a fraud in all aspects of his life, from his professional ambitions to his romantic involvements. Alex is by all accounts an unexceptional man, save for the fact that he is haunted by an extraordinary experience in the Galapagos Islands, the consequences of which threaten to upend the... Crafted with astonishing skill and empathy, The Origin of Species is a novel of emotional intensity, fierce intelligence, and searing humour. (show less)

Add: I still love Alex but disappointed in the ending, seemed to drift off course, much like the boat in the ill-fated Galapagos trip. Such long-winded... Add: I still love Alex but disappointed in the ending, seemed to drift off course, much like the boat in the ill-fated Galapagos trip. Such long-winded side trips after what seemed like it should have been the end of the book, it felt a bit like watching a beautiful balloon deflate slowly. Am still curious and will seek out his other works.

I loved reading about Alex's trip to the Galapagos (it was almost a novella unto itself). I also enjoyed the book's exploration of social evolution but felt that overall it would have benefited from some aggressive editing.
