Set in Montreal in the 1980s, The Origin of Species tells the story of thirty-something Alex Fratarcangeli (“I can’t even pronounce it myself,” he admits to an acquaintance), plagued by a familiar sense of being a fraud in all aspects of his life, from his professional ambitions to his romantic involvements. Alex is by all accounts an unexceptional man, save for the fact that he is haunted by an extraordinary experience in the Galapagos Islands, the consequences of which threaten to upend the... Alex is by all accounts an unexceptional man, save for the fact that he is haunted by an extraordinary experience in the Galapagos Islands, the consequences of which threaten to upend the precarious balance of his ordinary life.

Crafted with astonishing skill and empathy, The Origin of Species is a novel of emotional intensity, fierce intelligence, and searing humour. (show less)

The story is unabashedly Canadian in scope notwithstanding the Sweden & Galapagos content & centres on the life of a “professional student” in the 1980’s Montréal, Q.C. Alex Fratarcangeli.
It would be pointless to try & critique or give away plot lines as does every Canadian newspaper and lit blogs [Random House etc] and of course the book-sleeve itself. However, I think most readers would enjoy it more should they have some knowledge of Homer & James Joyce [Ulysses], and if you are not old enough to remember the CBC flagship programmes of the late Peter Gzowski you might miss the hilarious fantasy radio interviews between Alex & Peter himself.
There is a little of “everyman’ in Alex, but to say more would be too revealing. I can imagine this book to be a good topic of conversation for sometime. ☺
It is a great book. ***** Just excellent. IMHO. (show less)

  • Have not even begun the Galapagos incident and am already smitten; must add Ricci to my ever-growing list of favorites. Nino, where have you been all my life? Have to disagree and admit I like Alex and relate to so much, the love/hate with Trudeau and Gzowski and their virtual "interview". I see another long night (s) ahead of me!!
Add: I still love Alex but disappointed in the ending, seemed to drift off course, much like the boat in the ill-fated Galapagos trip. Such long-winded... (show more)

Add: I still love Alex but disappointed in the ending, seemed to drift off course, much like the boat in the ill-fated Galapagos trip. Such long-winded side trips after what seemed like it should have been the end of the book, it felt a bit like watching a beautiful balloon deflate slowly. Am still curious and will seek out his other works.
Now . . on to Ann Michaels! (show less)

  • I loved reading about Alex's trip to the Galapagos (it was almost a novella unto itself). I also enjoyed the book's exploration of social evolution but felt that overall it would have benefited from some aggressive editing.
