Moirin reminds me a little of Phedre in Kushiel's Dart. Just being young and free with herself, learning how to manipulate people in both good and ... (show more)

It's a hit!
No, it's a flop!
Sad to say, I am having a hard time finishing this one. Her first series, Kushiels legacy is far superior. So far this one is falling quite short.

Really engaging read, and I had a lot of fun with this new character. The book really seems to have three separate sections: Moirin's life in Alba growing up, then engaging in intrigue at the Royal Court in Elua, and then her adventure with her mentor to the other side of the world. I like that it was not so simple to predict what was going to happen as it might have been with Carey's other books (but even when I knew, I still enjoyed the ride). I liked this character much better than Imriel in the previous series, but perhaps not so much as Phedre from the first series.
As always, lots of fantastic supporting characters, and I would love to read more about the Ch'in princess and her strange relationship with Moirin.
I also really liked the new perspective of the character, who's not so central to Terre D'Ange and can provide some distance from them. I'm really curious to see where this series will go from here. (show less)

I enjoyed this one a lot. The characters are still complex enough to be interesting, things moved very quickly, and it was fun watching her try to figure out her destiny. She seems to have fulfilled part of it but still has a long way to go. I like that again, we are in another part of the world that mirrors our own but isn't quite right which allows for the magic to flow nicely. It's also nice that while reading the previous books helps, it's not mandatory as those characters are mere footnotes in this one. (show less)
