This is a lovely narrative that tells story of two French missionaries, and their struggle to serve their diocese in the harsh New Mexican desert environment. Each book is a "vignette" of life iin New Mexico in the late 1800's; the stories vividly portray the land and the peoples that embody New Mexico---the oases, the desert, the arroyos, the Indians, the animals, the Mexicans, the French, the Americans. Paganism and Roman Catholicism are beautifullyn interwoven in the tapestry. ... (show more)

The depth of Cather's writing is juxtaposed with her simplicity......her words are poetry, and your heart will ache for that place and time as these people and places become a part of your pysche......yes, Cather's beautiful, poignant book really and truly engage yourrheart and soul. Although not on the list of my favorite books, Death Comes to the Archbishop left me content at the end. Light on the plot, but developed the characters and scenery very well. It is a classic narrative of the Southwestern United States.
