Just finished this - and it confirms my suspicion that big government is bad, from the big lobbyists who manipulate data, to the FDA who tailor the nutritional guidelines to the wishes of the lobbyists, to the soda companies who pay schools to install vending machines stocked with 20 oz sodas in schools. Dense, kind of academic, but accessible report on how subtle hidden politics of food industry and government affect what we eat, what we buy, what is marketed to kids and adults. Illuminating, anger-generating, a bit long. (show less)

  • A good review of a lot of the influences that occur before food shows up at your supermarket. A reminder that the choices that we make are being influenced in a subtle way that we may not notice. Food lobbyist are a lot stronger then most people would think.

It is not done in the jingoistic way that some left wing sources would approach the idea with. It is a dense book so i would recommend flipping through it instead of trudging through it.

pretty thorough explanation of how the food industry markets to the public. Interesting facts on the FDA's lack of ability to regulate many products due to laws passed heavily endorsed by the food industry. long read. felt overwhelmed at times with facts and history of the industry that i'm not familiar with. i feel more informed after reading it, however it was tough to get all the way through.
