This monumental Pulitzer Prize-winning saga and iconic bestseller is available for the first time on audio. Roots begins with a birth in an African village in 1750, and ends two centuries later at a funeral in Arkansas. In that time span, an unforgettable cast of men, women, and children come to life, many of them based on the people from Alex Haley's own family tree.

Presented abridged on 12 CDs.

Alex Haley has weaved a masterpiece of oral history, familial knowledge, and colloquial writing that has culminated into a tale that aided in the climatic shift in American culture.

Alex Haley has weaved a masterpiece of oral history, familial knowledge, and colloquial writing that has culminated into a tale that aided in the climatic shift in American culture.

Although it starts off slow, one quickly moves at the pace of life of each character. By the time Kunta Kinte goes into the forest to get materials for his drum, you are captured into a story of loss, love, and persistance of life.

Riding on a packed subway at rush hour, I still had to fight back tears when Kizzy faced the consequences of foolhardy love. But everyone has their part, that section of the story that leaves you at a lost for words, breath, and thought.

In more ways than one, this is a book that truly immerses you. It opens you up to another world, reminding you that the truth is in the spaces between the words. You may forget where you are, but never, never, who you are. (show less)

  • One of the very few things that changed me forever. Even with a tint of fiction, this saga of unrelenting pursuit of freedom and the inherited faith in beliefs, over generations, left me restless for months. And some months later I was reborn.
