Audiobook version: Coming from an absolutely dismal audiobook of Meg Cabot's "Queen of Babble" (If you ever want to find yourself screaming at the protagonist to grow the F up / shut up, listen to / read that book), this was an absolute treasure. Recommended by a staff member of my local library, I was sure that this would be the answer to my needed change. I was right.

Gone is the vapid, annoying clothes whore female protagonist. In it's place is a story about life. This was not a book about useless spending and thoughtless consumer addiction, annoying label dropping or females pining after male leads. Marylin deals with real problems of infidelity, life changes, menopause and finding yourself after your children have moved on. This was a book about taking charge and figuring out what you want to do in your life, apart from everyone else.

The only thing that I wish Ms. McMillan had done before the book's close was to wrap up the storyline between Marylin and her first husband, Gordon. However, the book's conclusion is still solid and a great tie up to a great audiobook listen. There are various different storylines to keep you interested. This is a well flushed out and written book.

Also, I must state that this audiobook is outstanding due to the vocal talents of Desiree Taylor. Listening to her dialect and distinct voice and tone changes when moving in and out of character speech was refreshing, captivated my ears and enthralled me to continue listening. (show less)

(show less)

  • The narrator is a bit out of my age group (in her 40s) but I still found this book really well written and interesting. I'd certainly label it a page turner.
It's a great story about a woman who feels the need to start over and takes action.
She's dealing with ungrateful children, a cheating husband and a career that needs a boost.
Everyone else is looking out for themselves except her. It takes her 40+ years to realize this.

The book also talks about the importance of being loyal to your family, even when you'd prefer to focus on yourself. I'm now going to share this book with others. And I'm curious to read more from Terry McMillan. If this is just one of her okay books, I can only imagine what the others are like. Very quick read, pick it up and you will finish within a week! • Oh this is the most memorable of all her writings. It is one of those reads that sucks you right in being able to see, feel and smell what is being read....Beats the heck out of the movie Ghost.
