Evangelism is not only misunderstood, it is often unpracticed. Many Christians want to share the gospel with others, but because those Christians don t grasp the fundamentals of witnessing, they feel intimidated and incapable of sharing the truth of the gospel.

Evangelism is not only misunderstood, it is often unpracticed. Many Christians want to share the gospel with others, but because those Christians don t grasp the fundamentals of witnessing, they feel intimidated and incapable of sharing the truth of the gospel.

Yet those believers fail to recognize that God has already established who and how we are to evangelize. In The Gospel and Personal Evangelism, Dr. Mark Dever seeks to answer the four basic questions about evangelism that many Christians ask: Who should we evangelize? How should we evangelize? What is evangelism? Why should we evangelize? In his answers Dever draws on New Testament truths and helps believers apply those truths in practical ways. As readers understand the fundamentals of evangelism, they will begin to develop a culture of evangelism in their lives and their local churches. (show less)

This is a great book in helping define the purpose for evangelism, what is evangelism, and why does it matter. This is a topic that we usually don't think about often and unfortunately has taking a back seat in many of our walks in Jesus Christ. Dever brings us to have a biblically perspective on why evangelism is a command for every person regardless of if they believe they are gifted in it or not, and why in order to have a healthy church members have to be the fire for evangelism not just the elder(s).

Summary: The primary reason to evangelize is because we love God, and out of that flows a love for people. If I truly love people, in the way that flows from having a heart that loves God I would share with them who God is and why they should love Him. Our responsibility starts and stops at telling the message, what fruit and their response doesn't matter. We should be measured by our faithfulness to telling the message, not how many respond to the message.

It's rare I don't finish a book once started, especially when it's by an author I've previously read & generally respect. Additionally I was somewhat enthused to read this Mark Dever book hoping he would put a fresh spin on an important topic that is discussed almost ad nauseum in the religious tradition from which I've emerged, but rarely in an interesting & engaging way. And as a bonus it was relatively short! Unfortunately this book so boring I couldn't finish it. (show less)

This is a small book that could be a great small group read. Dever does a great job in sharing what the gospel is and what it is not and how we can personally evangelize.

I thought it was enlightening to read a book about what evangelism is and it's challenges. Mixed reaction all around due to the fact that some portions made me feel guilty. Hated the part that made the gospel sound like it was just another product for sale. but the language of sale might actually reach into 21st century minds and inspire faith in action. which is so sad. Also the book brought back to my attention the subject of Christian apologetics which is itself very much cliched in today's world where apology sounds more like an excuse for offense than it does a defense for something or truth. it's a very compact book in comparison to other books I've been reading this year but it has a habit of stopping short before depth is actually explored. with me I have a concern about various personality traits which get in the way of practicing this. of which I am almost too aware of my 'sin' of introvertedness. it also points to the fact that every one is different and will have a different style of evangelizing not one particular style for everyone. and well only God will hold all accountable based on our own unigue abilities and how we use them to further the kingdom in our different ways but all to the same end that all may know.
