When Abraham Verghese, a physician whose marriage is unraveling, relocates to El Paso, Texas, he hopes to make a fresh start as a staff member at the county hospital. There he meets David Smith, a medical student recovering from drug addition, and the two men begin a tennis ritual that allows them to shed their inhibitions and find security in the sport they love and with each other. This friendship between doctor and intern grows increasingly rich and complex, more intimate than two men usually allow. And just when it seems nothing more can go wrong, the dark beast from David's past emerges once again. As David spirals out of control, almost everything Verghese has come to trust and believe in is threatened. Compassionate and moving, The Tennis Partner is a unforgettable, illuminating story of how men live, and how they survive.

Author is doctor at Stanford U. Sounds like part fiction, part auto-bio. Med student under him becomes his friend and tennis partner. Then he finds out about his drug addiction. A little too in-depth with the tennis stuff. Medical stuff is interesting to me--hierarchy of med students, interns, residents, staff. (show less)

Hats off to DR. Verghese for penning down such a painfully honest "Chunk of his life". This book was simply a masterpiece written with great detail, affection & passion. Hats off to DR. Verghese for penning down such a painfully honest "Chunk of his life". This book was simply a masterpiece written with great detail, affection & passion. The friendship between the two men, its happy moments & its extremely heart- breaking tragic end moves your heart. In David I saw my friends, whom I have lost to drugs or who are still struggling with this demon. Dr. Verghese's helplessness reflected my own. As some one working in the field of HIV & drugs, I felt as if only the location & names have been changed of characters in the book. David's helplessness made me cry as did the climax of the book. Dr. Verghese's theory for David's death , holds true not only for him but for majority of the people who are substance abusers. For a non- medico like me, his description of his hospital, his patients & their illnesses was so lucid & enjoyable. I just wish, he had not gone so deep into the tennis part. The book is full of chapters devoted to back-hands, volleys, serves etc of JIm Conners, Arthur Ash etc. I do not understand tennis at all so I skipped the chapters. Highly recommended for it's refreshing way of presentation & its ability to move your heart (show less)

This book was beatifully written and haunting along the lines a Beatuful Boy (David Sheff)-- the drug culture is something that I hope I never understand or have to deal with. So sad.
