**SPOILER ALERT**
**SPOILER ALERT**

So many reviews I read of this book by fans of the previous two Dexter books said that this one was no good and almost everyone of them hated it. The two main complaints from fans were 1) they didn't like the idea posed that Dexter's "Dark Passenger" could possibly be linked to an ancient evil god or spirit and 2) they were offended by the fact that he is beginning to mentor Rita's kids to follow the "Harry Way". Personally, I liked this book just a bit better than the other two (and maybe it helped that I was expecting to hate it like everyone else).

There are several reasons why I like this one the best. Firstly, because I think Lindsay's writing style has evolved and it shows. The story just felt more fluid to me than the other two and I appreciate that. Secondly, I find the possibility of a supernatural origin for Dexter's dementia to be fascinating. I was intrigued by where the story might go. Lastly, if you are offended by the idea of Daddy Dexter teaching his new step-kids how to "not get caught" and by the fact that they are eager students...well, good! Let's not forget that as charming as Dexter is, he is still a killer...an efficient killer who thoroughly enjoys his hobby. It's easy to like this guy because of his wit and intelligence and because he seems to be doing society a favor by taking out others like him, but he is not exactly one of the good guys. Don't forget that. It's okay if the stories disturb you a bit...they should. That being said, the humor is still great and Dexter and all the other characters are still very amusing! Again, I think this book is better written than the other two and I am looking forward to the 4th.

FYI - The TV show is still WAY better than the books!!! :o) (show less)

I thought the first two Dexter novels were great. No complaints. Unfortunately, I did not feel the same about this novel at all. This novel brought in an element of the supernatural, basically saying that Dexter's "Dark Passenger" is an offspring - so to speak - of a demonic God. The novel deals with what is essentially a cult of people who both serve and are possessed by this demonic source. These people have recognized Dexter because of his Passenger and are now after him. It all felt contrived and did not fit the world in which Dexter lives and operates - namely OUR world. I waded through the book, but was not impressed nor very entertained. I feel like Lindsay completely got away from everything he had built up in the first two books. Deb was a pain in the ass, and Doakes made two unnecessary appearances. The only redeeming quality was the burgeoning violent tendencies showing up in Cody and Astor. Do yourself a favor... if you want to know what happened in this novel, just read the synopsis on Wikipedia. (show less)

This book is so stupid. Dexter is one of my favorite shows of all time, and I actually liked the first two of this series. But this book sucked. The first two books are all about how Dexter is rational. He fights off the urge to explain things in absurd and unrealistic terms, and now Lindsay wants to explain that Dexter's Dark Passenger is the bastard child of some ancient demon. I absolutely hated this book. Dexter barely kills anyone he just sulks for 200 pages about his boring domestic existence. Also, why would Lindsay bring back Sergeant Doakes as a drooling, incoherent captain hook with wobbly prosthetic feet. That is not a threatening nemesis. Honestly, the show is so much better than the book series, but I don't have Showtime, and I do not even know when the new season begins so I can watch it online. If you are a fan of the show do not read this book. Read the first two if you are interested, but then quit. (show less)

This book was a little harder to read than the previous books. I still enjoyed the book though. I don't agree that all the God type stuff detracts from the book, I would say that it adds to it. I only say that as I thought that it shows the depths of Dexter's despair at losing The Dark Passenger and the lengths he would go to in order to try and find him again. I only say that as I thought that it shows the depths of Dexter's despair at losing The Dark Passenger and the lengths he would go to in order to try and find him again. Normally the thought of a God doing all this would be laughable for Dexter, but he embraces anything that will help him find an answer to the question of what has frightened the Dark Passenger. I thought that Dexter missing a lot of his dark come backs and his put downs was a let down but I put this down to his character being in such a state of turmoil that he just wasn't himself.

OK the parts where IT is having it's story told is pretty weak, but not so weak that I'm going to mark the book down greatly. I thought that the book was exploring a different angle, and while some might not have enjoyed it as much as the others, I didn't dislike the idea of telling the story another way.

Dexter in the Dark was different but it isn't going to put me off continuing with Dexter. I hope the next one is as good as the previous books were. (show less)
