In That Old Ace in the Hole, Pulitzer Prize and National Book Award winner Annie Proulx has written an exhilarating story brimming with language, history, landscape, music, and love. The novel, Proulx's fourth, is told through the eyes of Bob Dollar, a young Denver man trying to make good in a bad world. Dollar is out of college but aimless, and he takes a job with Global Pork Rind -- his task to locate big spreads of land in the Texas and Oklahoma panhandles that can be purchased by the corporation and converted to hog farms.

Dollar finds himself in a Texas town called Woolybucket, whose idiosyncratic inhabitants have ridden out all manner of seismic shifts in panhandle country. These are tough men and women who survived tornadoes and dust storms, and witnessed firsthand the demise of the great cattle ranches. Now it's feed lots, hog farms, and ever-expanding drylands.

Dollar settles into LaVon Fronk's old bunkhouse for fifty dollars a month, helps out at Cy Frease's Old Dog Café, targets Ace and Tater Crouch's ranch for Global Pork, and learns the hard way how vigorously the old owners will hold on to their land, even though their children want no part of it.

Robust, often bawdy, strikingly original and intimate, That Old Ace in the Hole tracks the vast waves of change that have shaped the American landscape and character over the past century -- and in Bob Dollar, Proulx has created one of the most irresistible characters in contemporary fiction. Despite being fiction, nothing in my 3 yrs abroad has made me miss home more (ok, I can think of other things...). I really miss my days spent in Oklahoma. I miss this amazing landscape and the unique cultural geography of the panhandle on the great plains of the US. that being said, the book was entertaining enough, however there were so many names and characters introduced, that often took away from the main story line. but maybe that is the story line, the on-going and never ending personal histories of people connected to the land in that area of the plains. generations of families stay. as they say in oklahoma, "sooner born, and sooner bred, and when i die i'll be sooner dead". As a geographer, I really love these types of novels that make you the reader feel and understand the personal and cultural connections to the land. It ended on a note I did not expect, but not sure how realistic it really could be in real life. But, its nice to be idealistic once in awhile! (show less)

Could not get into it at all although I have enjoyed other Annie Proulx books and I have been to Wyoming. I kept trying to get through the book but at around page 250, I felt I was being tortured. I would not recommend it. (show less)

Good book! Coming from a smallish town and having spent time in western Texas this book is pretty believable. I do, however, believe it was lacking depth, but a great story none the less. I like her writing style, my observation is that she likes lists. Everytime you turn around she has lists of things. It's not really a bad thing and I'm not complaining I just thought it was interesting. The only thing about this book is she never reveals the story of how La Von's dad got the scars on ... ARGH! I WANTED TO KNOW WHY!!!!! LOL!!! :D (show less)

  • I found this overwritten and mired in quirk - rather than telling a story against the background of the Texas panhandle, it hops from anecdote to anecdote designed to make the reader grin knowingly at the oddness of people. It's thick with self-conscious language and padding. I've enjoyed other Annie Proulx books but this one was a disappointment.
