I often wonder why an author would pick a subject that has has so much written about him like George Washington. After reading "Washington" I can see why. Douglas Freeman uses many references to produced a clear picture of the man, George Washington. The man that wanted to be a planter, not a soldier. The man that wanted to retire, not be president. The man that believed in the cause of America so strongly, he became the icon of the revolution. Perhaps America's first real celebrity. Freeman skips over the war campaigns and details, this is not about the war, the rebellion or the Constitution. This is about who George Washington was, why he made the decisions that he made and did the things he did. How he managed to keep the revolution going even though he was at all times out numbered, out supplied and out gunned. If you wonder what kind of person does the things the George Washington did, Freedman gives us as clear a view into his person as we can get 200+ years later. (show less)

Great bio on General Washington. As Dr Freeman was more of a military historian, this deals more with his career in the field. However, that does not take away from the investigation of Washington's (short) political career.
