In the grand manner of Interview with the Vampire, Anne Rice's new novel moves across time and the continents, from nineteenth-century Vienna to a St. Charles Greek Revival mansion in present-day New Orleans to dazzling capitals of the modern-day world, telling a story of two charismatic figures bound to each other by a passionate commitment to music as a means of rapture, seduction, and liberation.

This book was a very poetic read. You sort of drift and feel as though you're hanging with the caterpillar in Alice in Wonderland and maybe you've inhaled too much of what he's smoking. It's about a woman whose husband has died and she's not really all there upstairs if you know what I mean. She keeps the body and sleeps by it, snuggles with it, really cute and creepy at the same time. Well, she stays mellow by listening to some classical music like Beethoven to distract her mind. Well, she starts hearing a violin when she shouldn't be. And this is a frequent occurrence. Then she realizes she's being haunted by a ghost who is constantly playing a violin. It's not really a "Devil went down to Georgia" type senario. It goes into his story and everything. I know I'm not doing any justice to the book here but it really was a trippy and beautiful read. I do love it and would definitely read it again. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

Strangely terrible. If this had been the first book I read I would never have touched anything else she had ever written.

  • Picked this one up to read on vacation as a leisurely book. It's fine if you keep in mind that it's not necessarily in the Anne Rice style. I will note that despite all the sobbing, crying, tearing up, and other wise overly emotive characters (the book is about grief and music and how they are intertwined for two main characters) It was a fine read for a holiday. Somehow, the highs and lows and all the emotions displayed by the characters (who can at times be hard to relate to) do parallel... (show more)

Somehow, the highs and lows and all the emotions displayed by the characters (who can at times be hard to relate to) do parallel the music made and played by the Violin. If you're in the mood for a quick (not too serious) read, you could do worse. (show less)

Surreal, dramatic and mesmerising, VIOLIN moves across time and continents to bring together three lost souls bound to one another through music, passion and rapture. (show less)
