So begins The Doctor's Wife, a stunning debut novel about four people and the cataclysmic intersection of their lives. Michael is a rising OB/GYN at a prominent private practice in Albany, New York; he also moonlights at a local women's health clinic. But Annie, his wife, has become tired of her workaholic husband's absences, and the soccer-mom lifestyle has worn thin. She begins a passionate love affair with bad-boy, fading celebrity painter Simon Haas - an affair that quickly goes awry when Simon's wife Lydia, who is also the model upon whom he built his career, discovers the truth.
Abortion, local evangelism, marital disenchantment, and the rifts of social class: Brundage takes on the fault lines of our era with a deft hand.
"A fine debut, full of psychological suspense, plot twists and turns, malice disguised as religion, the taint of incest, and cheating spouses."-Library Journal
"No character inhabiting this story will escape unscathed from the choices they've made... [a] well-crafted work .- "Ms. Magazine (show less)

It's a hit!
No, it's a flop!
Suspenseful! Crazy teams up with pathetic in this book. All of the characters are deeply flawed, but you're left feeling sorry for no one.

This book was really intense. Lydia's character was very interesting and convincing in being a depressed, deranged, jealous wife. I really liked how Simon predicted earlier in the book that he always knew that Lydia would be the end of him. I thought that Michael's commitment to the clinic was admirable, but became too much when it started to interfere with the lives of his family. It's important to stand your ground for something you believe in, but should you allow yourself to forget that... (show more)
This book was really intense. It's important to stand your ground for something you believe in, but should you allow yourself to forget that your actions are effecting the ones you love? The book also gave me a different insight to how violent and determined Pro-life supporters can be for their cause? I'm Pro-choice myself, but these people so obsessed with saving the lives of unborn babies, how do they rationalize bombing a clinic of doctors? It's to say you're Pro-life when you're willing to end the lives of others to prevent a baby from being aborted.
The short version: This book will keep you wrapped up in it's multiple layers of complexity of the lives of the characters, to what they believe, and what they would be passionate enough to kill for. (show less)

I wasn't sure about this at the beginning, but once I got into it, I absolutely loved the characters (my favorite being Lydia). Purchased this on a whim at a bargain price on Amazon, and was thrilled that I did. While others felt that the characters needed more development, I felt the complete opposite - Lydia is as dysfunctional as they come, with a history of mental illness, Michael is a doctor so wrapped up in his career that he completely forgets the importance of his family, Simon is a... I wasn't sure about this at the beginning, but once I got into it, I absolutely loved the characters (my favorite being Lydia). Purchased this on a whim at a bargain price on Amazon, and was thrilled that I did. While others felt that the characters needed more development, I felt the complete opposite - Lydia is as dysfunctional as they come, with a history of mental illness, Michael is a doctor so wrapped up in his career that he completely forgets the importance of his family, Simon is an artist who is well past his prime and is a total player, and Annie is a woman who is finally living life a bit for herself. The cussing in the book wasn't really a noticeable piece for me, which I am taking as adding to the character personalities... While the topics were definitely controversial, they do exist in the world - whether we agree or disagree with them! (show less)
