As a world-class equestrian and Olympic contender, Annemarie Zimmer lived for the thrill of flight atop a strong, graceful animal. Then, at eighteen, a tragic accident destroyed her riding career and Harry, the beautiful horse she cherished.

As a world-class equestrian and Olympic contender, Annemarie Zimmer lived for the thrill of flight atop a strong, graceful animal. Then, at eighteen, a tragic accident destroyed her riding career and Harry, the beautiful horse she cherished.

Now, twenty years later, Annemarie is coming home to her dying father's New Hampshire horse farm. Jobless and abandoned, she is bringing her troubled teenage daughter to this place of pain and memory, where ghosts of an unresolved youth still haunt the fields and stables—and where hope lives in the eyes of the handsome, gentle veterinarian Annemarie loved as a girl . . . and in the seductive allure of a trainer with a magic touch.

But everything will change yet again with one glimpse of a white striped gelding startlingly similar to the one Annemarie lost in another lifetime. And an obsession is born that could shatter her fragile world.

Every now and then an author will come along and tell my story. Riding lessons is my story in so many ways. I could really relate to Annemarie and her parents, being born into a family of "foreigners". Her love and yet aversion to her parents is so familiar. But the most human part of the book is the way she just is. While on the outside she may function well, the inside of her is just a human trying to do the next right thing. What goes on her head is the questioning of why. She is just living life, enjoying it at times, fearing it, but just living. I relate to her feelings about her daughter just as I experienced similar feelings towards my now 19 year old son. No one tells you that the person in the world that you want to kill the most is the self same person that you would cut out your own heart with a dull rusty butter knife to save. I highly recommend this book to all parents, but especially to mothers who question their decisions and realize that life is about never being absolutely grown up. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

Predictable. Gruen does a great job of charactorizing one to the most self centered women ever. no self awareness presents itself.

I bought this because I read Water For Elephants and really enjoyed the magical setting of the circus in the 1930's and 40's. Unfortunately, while the story is somewhat entertaining, Sara Gruen fails to capture that same element of magic in this novel.
