Their mutual attraction quickly grows into the kind of love that leaves Savannah waiting for John to finish his tour of duty, and John wanting to settle down with the woman who captured his heart. But 9/11 changes everything. John feels it is his duty to re-enlist. And sadly, the long separation finds Savannah falling in love with someone else. "Dear John," the letter read...and with those two words, a heart was broken and two lives were changed forever. not gonna lie when i saw the trailer to this movie i started getting teary eyed. i believed i marched myself to the nearest borders and bought myself a copy. needless to say i read this book in about 6 hours. i couldn't put it down, the second i started to read it i instantly felt connected to john. he was such a great character -- a troubled kid who just wants to grow up to become a better man. and you want him to become a better man, the entire book i was rooting for him to be that man. as with other nicholas sparks books i could not stop crying, but surprisingly what got me reaching for tissues was how the relationship between john and his father unfolded. it wasn't until the very end i realized how utterly sad and happy i was at the same time about how things turned out with him and savannah. this book has a way of pulling you into the lives of each character, i found myself smiling at the beginning when john and savannah first met. i cried when he had to leave her. i felt his pain when he was away from her, and my heart broke a little when he got her last letter. i knew from the beginning of the book that it was going to break my heart, and damn you nicholas sparks -- i really think he finds great pleasure in writing completely heart wrenching books. however sad this book made me feel, i think it was a fantastic story to read. it makes you think of the choices you make in your life and what becomes of them. this book is one of the biggest "what if" stories, and while i thought i was going to be upset with the ending i found that i was surprisingly happy with how it turned out. What a major major disappointment. Nicholas Sparks must have written this on his off day. This goes without saying that I did not like this the least bit. This was one of the worst I read of his. Basically nothing happened and when something did happen it wasn't really eventful or explored. I was stratching my head the entire time. The characters especially Shavanna seemed whinny, John was a cliche character and father, the whole time I felt sad for him. How can you create a story when a guy's at war and sees no action, nothing really happened to him and this was during the 2001 invasion. Every time I thought something would happen it never did. Why bring up his father's aliment if that plot is never developed. This book had so many opportunities to be something greater and somehow never accomplished anything. I was bored the entire time, praying for anything, a plague, a fire , a bomb or maybe someone would die. This was like suffering through Twilight all over again. (show less)

I have always enjoyed Nicholas Sparks' books and this one was no different. Although slow at times, the book was really moving. Seeing the two characters gradually fall in love with one another and then throwing life in mix tand having it challenge their relationship made it seem real and how love can really be, well, heartbreaking. Nicholas sparks never fails to get your hopes up about the relationships of the characters in his books and then throws in some twist. I'm not gonna lie, I ... (show more)

I'm not gonna lie, I cried like a baby because the ending was not what I thought it would be. The ending leaves you with this longing heartbreak feeling that's hard to shake. I'm curious about the movie and i'm sure it's going to be a tear jerker. You can never be sure if they will change the ending or not, but there's something to be said about this book, it's differnt from your happy ending type of story. Have tissues in your pocket when you read it. (show less)

Grab a tissue...Really...I mean it. Nicholas Sparks has such an amazing ability write an amazing love story that pulls your heart strings. This was a superb novel. I cannot wait to see how they portray all the characters and the story in the upcoming movie early 2010. This novel has such a wonderful ending that leaves you wanting more. It is a page-turner. You will not want to put it down once you begin. It makes you appreciate the men and women fighting for our freedom overseas and pray for them and their loved ones left behind. I cannot even imagine being involved in the war but also cannot imagine being the loved one left behind here at home. It is a touching story of strong love between man and woman...and also the relationship of a father and a son. I highly recommend this novel for immediate reading. Hope you enjoy it as much as I have! And Remember...Grab A Tissue! (show less)

I gave up on this book with a little over 100 pages left, it's very boring and uneventful. I liked the character of John, but I could not stand the character of Savannah. She too much of a do-gooder, with absolutely no flaws (the fact that she was almost date raped during her first year of college does not count as a flaw), she was much to holier than thou and I found that very annoying and uninteresting. Her character was not believable. I will still see the movie, I always enjoy movies based on Nicholas Sparks' books, but not the books themselves. I bought this on a whim thinking I would enjoy it, even though I have tried to like his books before to no avail. I should have known better!

Channing Tatum is perfect for John. Just what I imagine. I'm a little surprised at Amanda Seyfried, she struck me more as a Susie than Savanah.

Ahh. this is my favorite NS book, if I cried during the book, I'll surely cry during the movie! However, I think Channing was a good choice for John.
