Have you ever wondered about the creative process of your favorite authors? Ever wondered who loves money more than life? What doors do the secret keys unlock? What old lady wears fur jackets? Who needs to punch a boxing ball before work? Have you ever wondered about the creative process of your favorite authors? Ever wondered who loves money more than life? What doors do the secret keys unlock? What old lady wears fur jackets? Who needs to punch a boxing ball before work? With primary evidence from the very private lives of those contemporary authors that are lingering on the doorstep of the literary canon, How I Write is an editorial powerhouse of more than sixty original features by Jonathan Franzen, Jeffrey Eugenides, Joyce Carol Oates, Rick Moody, Will Self, Nicole Krauss, and many others. Letters, photographs, drawings, even candy wrappers, phone bills, and other scattered mementos will be strikingly presented in this smartly designed volume. Using the same research team that previously published the unknown letters of Hunter S. Thompson, Charles Dickens's notebook, Harold Pinter's blues lyrics, and a nude shot of Alan Ginsberg, How I Write offers unpublished and unseen material illuminating the secret lives of authors. A must-have for the growing fan base of McSweeny's and other literary magazines, the book, designed by legendary and award-winning art director Vince Frost, will also be a perfect gift for all writers, readers, and anyone interested in books, ideas, and design. Another marvelous gift from marvelous Maggie. Dan Crowe is the creator of the cult-literary magazine Zembla. (I had never heard of him.) He got the notion to poll writers, and sent out a query to the luminaries of the day. Where do you get your ideas?, he asked them. What do you do all day? What inspires you? This book is a compilation of over 60 responses from the likes of A.S. Byatt, Johathan Franzen, Joyce Carol Oates, Alain de Botton, and Jane Smiley. There’s even a response from the loathed author of my original Chicken Pounder, who I still maintain should be roasting on a stake like a weenie.

But where was I? Writer respondents sent Crowe words, pictures, and abstract concepts…this book is a quirky assemblage of a myriad of personal inspirations that coax beautiful words onto paper in the solitary world where writers write. A.S. Byatt consults a Creature that sits on her desk. It looks like a Welch troll. She sent a picture of it. Joyce Carol Oates stares dreamily at a painting of a woman done by her friend Gloria Vanderbilt. The woman in the painting has no tattoo in evidence. Another writer sticks post-it notes of ideas in neat battalion lines all over the office walls. My friend the Fabulous Anne does exactly the same thing when she works, but she doesn’t need as many stickies as this guy does. Alain de Botton swears by his Very Large Desk. Also pictured. Lots of word people write of favorite prints, paintings, or little desktop sculptures. Others have special drinks and special foods. There is something secret and intimate and confessional about this book. I really love it. My favorite author response is from Jane Smiley.

She takes hot showers. Her ideas come with the water.

That’s the way it works for me, too. (show less)

I suppose this is fine for what it is. If you're interested in the personal habits of published authors, go ahead and grab this. But, it shouldn't be classified with the how TO write books. There is nothing substantive here. (show less)

interesting and full of great images but the selection of the writers is a bit eclectic for my taste...however i like knowing the quirky habits of writers. just as quirky as anyone else i believe, and makes me feel very normal.

If you've ever been inspired to write, than spend a bit of time reading about what inspires a wide-ranging group of writers. Totems. Pictures. Images. Lists. Pieces of furniture. It could be anything. And that's a bit of the point, really. That inspiration can be any thing. And anywhere. Which is a comfort, whether you want to be a writer or not.
