Best-selling author Michael Connelly, whose character-driven literary mysteries have earned him a wide following, breaks from the gate in the over-crowded field of legal thrillers and leaves every other contender from Grisham to Turow in the dust with this tightly plotted, brilliantly paced, impossible-to-put-down novel.Criminal defense attorney Mickey Haller's father was a legendary lawyer whose clients included gangster Mickey Cohen (in a nice twist, Cohen's gun, given to Dad then bequeathed to his son, plays a key role in the plot). But Dad also passed on an important piece of advice that's especially relevant when Mickey takes the case of a wealthy Los Angeles realtor accused of attempted murder:"The scariest client a lawyer will ever have is an innocent client. Because if you [screw] up and he goes to prison, it'll scar you for life."Louis Roulet, Mickey's "franchise client" (so-called becaue he's able and willing to pay whatever his defense costs) seems to be the one his father warned him against, as well as being a few rungs higher on the socio-economic ladder than the drug dealers, homeboys, and motorcycle thugs who comprise Mickey's regular case load. But as the holes in Roulet's story tear Mickey's theory of the case to shreds, his thoughts turn more to Jesus Menendez, a former client convicted of a similar crime who's now languishing in San Quentin. Connelly tellingly delineates the code of legal ethics Mickey lives by: "It didn't matter...whether the defendant 'did it' or not. What mattered was the evidence against him--the proof--and if and how it could be neutralized. My job was to bury the proof, to color the proof a shade of gray. Gray was the color of reasonable doubt." But by the time his client goes to trial, Mickey's feeling a few very reasonable doubts of his own. While Mickey's courtroom pyrotechnics dazzle, his behind-the-scenes machinations and manipulations are even more incendiary in this taut, gripping novel, which showcases all of Connelly's literary gifts. There's not an excess sentence or padded paragraph in it--what there is, happily, is a character who, like Harry Bosch, deserves a franchise series of his own. --Jane Adams (show less)

First Line: The morning air off the Mojave in late winter is as clean and crisp as you'll ever breathe in Los Angeles County.

I overdosed on legal thrillers years ago, when John Grisham and Scott Turow were at the very top of their game. Although the plots were still complex and dazzling, I'd begun to feel claustrophobic for some reason, and I stopped reading them. I needed to get out of the courtroom.

If there's one author whom I can't ignore, it's Michael Connelly. When The Lincoln Lawyer came out, I couldn't believe it. One of my favorite authors had written a legal thriller! I studiously ignored the book until The Brass Verdict appeared. Once I realized that Mickey Haller, the Lincoln lawyer himself, was going to be appearing with my beloved Harry Bosch, I knew I'd have to bite the bullet and read up on what makes Mickey Haller tick.

I should've bitten that bullet a long time ago.

Defense attorney Mickey Haller does a lot of his business from the back of his Lincoln. In fact, he has a whole fleet of the automobiles. By the time I met Mickey, he had all the appearance of a completely jaded legal hack:

I didn't deal in guilt and innocence, because everybody was guilty. Of something. But it didn't matter, because every case I took on was a house built on a foundation poured by overworked and underpaid laborers. They cut corners. They made mistakes. And then they painted over the mistakes with lies. My job was to peel away the paint and find the cracks. To work my fingers and tools into those cracks and widen them. To make them so big that either the house fell down or, failing that, my client slipped through.

For all his world-weary talk of everyone being guilty of something, Haller is also pointing the finger at himself. He feels that he didn't do everything possible when he defended Jesus Menendez, who's now looking life without parole straight in the eyes from the "comfort" of San Quentin. Regardless of how he may be perceived outwardly, Haller is a good guy who remains on very good terms with both ex-wives, and who secretly longs to be presented with a truly innocent man to defend. (He worries that, after all this time, he won't be able to recognize innocence when he sees it.)

Then Louis Roulet is charged with assault and attempted murder. This is what Haller calls a "franchise case" because Roulet's mother will pay any amount of money to see her son declared innocent. But the more Haller and his investigator Raul Levin work on this case, the more things don't add up. Haller finds himself caught in a deadly web, and it's going to take every speck of his smarts to work his way out of it intact.

Connelly worked his magic on me once again. Within a few pages, I was fascinated with the character of Mickey Haller. For all his quiet, matter-of-fact posturing and pronouncements, he still retains a remarkable degree of gullibility. The pacing is perfect throughout the book, gathering speed with each successive chapter. When Haller realizes the trap he's fallen into, the plan he puts together to extricate himself is brilliant and almost guaranteed to keep readers glued to the page.

Since I had such a great reading experience with Lawyer Haller, am I going to add legal thrillers to my reading diet once more? No, but I certainly am ready for The Brass Verdict! (show less)

I really enjoyed this one. Not as involved as Harry Bosch books, but the protagonist is interesting, I hope there will be more of these. The story was plausible, if not riveting. It could have been more involved and more convoluted legally, but it was ok. I kind of wished for a bit more drama. (show less)

Michael Connelly (b. Philadelphia, 1956) is the author of many crime novels, most notably the Harry Bosch series. The signature character in this novel is Mickey Haller, a defense lawyer in Los Angeles, and the half-brother of Harry Bosch. Haller, who enjoys modest success as a lawyer for the defense, operates in the gray area between ethical and unethical. He is called a Lincoln Lawyer because his office is the back seat of his Lincoln Towncar. Actually, he owns four of them.

The action opens with the rape and attempted murder of a prostitute. A rich real estate broker is arrested on the scene. A bloody knife is found on him. It looks like an open-and-shut case until Haller is called into the case. At first the case is given to Haller's ex-wife, an experienced and very skilled prosecutor. She cannot prosecute a case in which her ex-husband is the attorney for the defense, so it is given to a very young and very green prosecutor, who turns out to be laughably incompetent. At first Haller thinks his client is innocent.

Haller's crack investigator, Raul Levin, begins investigating the case. He turns up some striking similarities between this case and the rape and murder of another prostitute a couple of years ago. Haller had defended the defendant in this case. He had talked his client into a plea deal because he was convinced this was the only thing that would save the young man from a murder one conviction and the death penalty.

Levin is murdered before he can present evidence that the real estate agent was the killer. Haller by this time believes his client is guilty of both crimes. but he must do the best job possbile defending his client. Read the book if you want to know how it ends.

Michale Connelly is an extremely skilled writer of crime fiction. I can recommend it to all fans of the genre with no reservations. (show less)

This is the first ‘legal drama’ novel I have read by Connelly having previously read many of his detective novels. Nominated for a number of awards in 2005 this is a great story that twists and turns and right up until the end you are not sure what the various outcomes will be and whether justice will be served or not.

A top rate thriller. (show less)
