The Feast of All Saints
Set in New Orleans before the American Civil War, this is the story of the "Free People of Color", descended from slaves, and their French and Spanish owners. Among their number is Marcel, an artist in the making, also his gentle sister Marie and Anna Bella, a beautiful young courtesan.

like most of Rice's books, it's a colorful story written into a vivid landscape. only a little slow if you're used to the vampire books, but i enjoyed the complex characters and emotional twists. i enjoy how she researches with a passion before writing in historical contexts.

A great peek at historical New Orleans, well written with great characters. Am getting sick of constant homosexual male themes in her book though, don't think she can do one without it as a fairly major part..
