Winner of the MTV Fiction Contest

Marking the debut of a vibrant new voice in American fiction, Floating is a poignant and sharply original novel about the fragile boundaries between desire, love, and betrayal. Slow pacing, flat characters, boring setting, cliche plot. The author really tried too hard with this one. I felt like I was reading a middle schooler's attempt at writing. She tried to be descriptive and did succeed in being original with some of her descriptions of characters, setting, etc, but most of the time there were so many of them in rapid fire succession that her attempt at originality ended up feeling like I was being force fed. Her narrative was choppy, and IMHO, entirely ineffective. It may have been an attempt to immerse the reader in the book, but it only succeeded in preventing me from immersing myself in her world. I ended up only subjected myself to the first 5 or 6 chapters, then decided to skim the rest. Good thing I did, too, 'cause it didn't get any better. If you like reading painfully mediocre books, feel free to give this one a try. :P (show less)

It was really hard for me to get through this book because it didn't keep enough of my interest. The story was alright but I probably wouldn't read it again.

  • Yeah, I feel the same. It's an easy book to put down and come back to, though, which works for me.
