Unbelievable, really. Dr. Beck Weathers (a Pathologist) was literally "Left for Dead" twice during the 1996 Mt. Everest Disaster. After the storm... (show more)

In 1996 Beck Weathers and a climbing team pushed toward the summit of Mount Everest. Then a storm exploded on the mountain, ripping the team to shreds, forcing brave men to scratch and crawl for their lives. Rescuers who reached Weathers saw that he was dying, and left him.
Twelve hours later, the inexplicable occurred. Weathers appeared, blinded, gloveless, caked with ice — coming down the mountain as a “dead man walking.”
In this powerful memoir, Weather describes not only his escape from hypothermia and the murderous storm that killed nine climbers; he describes another journey, a life’s journey. This is the story of a man’s route to a dangerous sport and a fateful expedition, as well as the road of recovery he has traveled since.
In Left for Dead, we are witness to survival in the face of certain death, the reclaiming of a family and a life, and the most remarkable adventure of all: what we can do when we’re offered a second chance. (show less)

This is Beck Weather's account of his ordeal in the 1996 disaster on Everest. Those familiar with Into Thin Air will recognize his name as the man who was left on the mountain by Sherpas and other climbers who believed him to be dead. The book is very simply written and a quick read - it certainly doesn't have the impact that Krakauer's book does - and, at time, Weathers comes across as almost unlikeable. The best part for me was hearing of the other climbs Weathers made before the Everest attempt; I've read lots about Everest, but nearly nothing about the other 8000M peaks. (show less)

I was really impressed with this book. If you are familiar with Krakauer's "Into Thin Air" then you know the story of Beck Weathers, he was the man left on the South Col by Sherpas and guides, left to die, then after stumbling into a tent at camp IV he was left again alone in a tent, unable to keep himself warm or even in a sleeping bag.

For those of you expecting a lot of detail about the 1996 Everest season, you'll be disappointed, there isn't a lot on the Everest climb itself. The story is more about Beck's life, what led to him being a part of the Everest expedition and his long journey not only home but back to physical and mental health.
The book details Weather's attempt for the seven summits--which he nearly attained he's only missing McKinley which he was forced to abandon during inclimate weather and of course Everest.
It's a great read and I highly recommend it. (show less)

Chilling and inspiorational tale of survival. Tinged with a good deal understandable of bitterness though.
