SEX. Splashed across magazine covers, billboards, and computer screens--sex is casual, aggressive, and absolutely everywhere. And everybody's doing it, right? In Real Sex, heralded young author Lauren F. Winner speaks candidly to Christians about the difficulty--and the importance--of sexual chastity. With honesty and wit, she talks about her struggle to live a celibate life. Never dodging tough terms like "confession" and "sin," Winner grounds her discussion of chastity first and foremost in Scripture. She confronts cultural lies about sex and challenges how we talk about sex in church. Her biblically grounded observations and suggestions will be especially valuable to unmarried Christians struggling with the sexual mania of today's culture. Real Sex is essential reading for Christians grappling with chastity and a valuable tool for pastors. (show less)

I was absolutely blown away by this book. As a 20 year old, single Bible college student, I've read my fair share of books on sexuality, singleness, chastity, etc. This book was recommended highly by one of my professors so I decided to borrow it from him and read it. I was so impressed by Winner's thoughts on chastity that I finished the book in a day then had to go back and re-read it over Thanksgiving break. Very rarely do you get a book against gnosticism when you read about chastity. I loved the way she weaved together theology and practical application. I think the best thing about Real Sex was it's emphasis on the body, both our physical bodies and the Body of Christ. I highly recommend this book to anyone who is interested in a theology of sexuality or chastity and is tired of the normal Christian books on the topic. Winner winsomely handles the topic in a personal and conversational way. (show less)

While interesting, I was disappointed. I love Winner's other books, but this one, even though not that old, really felt dated. I felt she did not present any new solid arugments that work for practicing chasity in today's society. I also wish she would have used more scripture. (show less)

With humor, honesty, and insight, Winner approaches the topic of chastity, "doing sex God's way," in the community of believers. Both married and single people will benefit from the theological treatment of this touchy subject. Parents need to read it if only to gain an additional, and helpful, perspective on pre-marital sex as they raise their children in what is hopefully more than a "just don't do it" attitude, but rather answering the question,"why is chastity ben... With humor, honesty, and insight, Winner approaches the topic of chastity, "doing sex God's way," in the community of believers. Both married and single people will benefit from the theological treatment of this touchy subject. Parents need to read it if only to gain an additional, and helpful, perspective on pre-marital sex as they raise their children in what is hopefully more than a "just don't do it" attitude, but rather answering the question,"why is chastity beneficial?" Read it first, then have your teens read and discuss with you. Married couples will also benefit--Winner does not shy away from discussing "routine, married sex" and the cultural lie that it must always be exciting to be good.

The final three chapters touch on themes of chastity as a discipline, repentance as key to true worship, and the church community as responsible to include singles in the normalcy of church life. In a world saturated with magazines and web sites promoting cheap, empty pleasure, this biblical, theological approach to purity offers a comprehensive alternative. (show less)

Although at first blush this book may seem to be geared towards singles, at least that is what I thought when I bought it. Even though I was married I was intrigued and know enough single people that I thought it would be good for me to read. Although at first blush this book may seem to be geared towards singles, at least that is what I thought when I bought it. Even though I was married I was intrigued and know enough single people that I thought it would be good for me to read. Actually it is a biblical theological look at sex in general with an eye toward how to apply that ethic to our situation in the twenty-first century. With wit and candor Lauren Winner explores the ins and outs of sex according to God's parameters in the bible. Many reviewers hate this because it does not really address alternative sexual orientations and practices, but that is not what the book is intended to explore (see the subtitle and introduction). Ms. Winner gives a lot of very penetrating insight, and for some, comes to some pretty counter-cultural conclusions that might change the way you not only approach the topic of sex, but worship. All that to say you should read this book. If you have adolescents and teens at home read it with them and talk it over at the dinner table. (show less)
