I don't know why I loved this little book so much, but I did. It is the perfect blend of poignant and funny.

not my favorite lorrie moore... i feel like the lyrical way she writes lends itself more to the short story format. plus, i have to say that i prefer the way that michelle tea writes the whole awkward teenager with homoerotic undertones thing. or maybe i just get enough of that through ms. tea's stories. i also agree that while the 'flashbacks' to the narrator's childhood are engaging, there is never really a payoff with the older version of the narrator. and the end of the book seems slapped together. if you like lorrie moore, read 'birds of america' instead... It was an interesting immersion into the mind of a woman who every step of the way seems to be unsure of who she is and what she wants out of life. Or at least that was the part of the narrator's life on which the author focused- mainly her confused childhood and tenuous marriage. One could either dwell on the seemingly large gaps glossed over in brief passages (as the novel was quite short) or just enjoy the emotive resonance. I chose the latter.

I enjoyed this book. Through some of it I felt like I was reading about my own childhood, which is probably why I enjoyed it. It was a nice easy read, and very funny.
