More than anything in the world, Andrew wants freckles. His classmate Nicky has freckles -- they cover his face, his ears, and the whole back of his neck. (Once sitting behind him in class, Andrew counted eighty-six of them, and that was just a start!

One day after school, Andrew screws up enough courage to ask Nicky where he got his freckles. And, as luck would have it, who should overhear him but giggling, teasing Sharon (who makes frog faces at everybody!)

Sharon offers Andrew her secret freckle juice recipe -- for fifty cents.

That's a lot of money to Andrew -- five whole weeks allowance! He spends a sleepless night, torn between his desire for freckles and his reluctance to part with such a substantial sum of money. Finally, the freckles win, and Andrew decides to accept Sharon's offer.

After school, Andrew rushes home (with the recipe tucked into his shoe for safekeeping). He carefully begins to mix the strange combination of ingredients -- and immediately runs into some unforeseen problems.

How Andrew finally manages to achieve a temporary set of freckles -- and then isn't sure he really wants them -- makes a warm and hilarious story. (show less)

This is a wonderful story about a boy who wants freckles so that he never has to wash the back of his neck. Every time he wants to go somewhere his mom checks his neck and makes him go wash it. He believes that if he has freckles, his mother won't be able to see any dirt and he won't have to wash the back of his neck all the time. He uses a marker to dot fake freckles on his face but he can't find his brown marker so he uses a purple one. His attempts to obtain freckles continue to get more and more absurd. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

Not fantastic for the adult reader. I think my son would enjoy reading it, and that the reading level would be about right for him.

A year 2 boy Andrew desperately wants freckles so that his mother won't make him wash his neck as he reasons she won't be able to see the dirt. Doesn't he know mothers can always see dirt? And that we presume it's there even if we can't see it? Anyway he gets swindled by a girl in class and buys her recipe for freckle juice. I can't quite see the point to the book, but apparently kid readers like it, so will try it with my 7 y.o. son before it's due back at the library. (show less)

  • Fast reading, for me of course. About a kid who really wants freckles and his conniving classmate who suckers him. Your 2nd-3rd grader will enjoy this.
