Seven Wild Sisters is a modern back woods fairy tale focusing on Sarah Jane, the middle daughter of seven sisters. Seven Wild Sisters is a modern back woods fairy tale focusing on Sarah Jane, the middle daughter of seven sisters. I read this book a few years back when looking for fantasy or sci-fi stories with a female protagonist that we could offer as fare for my oldest daughter. Although she is not quite to the reading level, I will be suggesting it soon. I found the descriptions of the siblings in their rural setting enjoyable and the fairy tale nostalgic. I seem to be drawn to tales of children learning about the flora around them, and Sarah Jane led me once again along the trail. The fusion of nature and those on the other side is reminiscent of several of George MacDonald's short stories, where the interaction of children with fairies always provides an opportunity for the children to learn and the fairies to be, well, fairies. The author relates the story of herbs, nature, art, and music in a compelling way and encourages sharing time with elders, something I want my children to instill in theirs when I am elderly. I think I might go back and read this book again. (show less)

I think I had read this before, but it didn't stick with me, so I picked it up again. It's classic DeLint, with the amazing talents of Charles Vess to illuminate the story, but it's not one that lingers. A lovely little book.
