I have an older published version of this.

Oh, how I love the Bald Soprano and the Lesson. The Bald Soprano is CLASSIC absurdism at its best.

And the Lesson is so dark and yet brilliant. The existential mathematics alone are just hilarious. This was my first introduction to Ionesco and to Theatre really when I read it with my theatre professor in front of class lo these 27 years ago! And I still love the play to this day. And not just because I had a crush on my theatre teacher.

  • When you're writing fiction, you don't need to cling to worn-out realism to make the same strong points about life. Ionesco and a few others were masters of this uncanny art of storytelling and I would consider these plays a great guide for any curious writer.

  • I love this author and his strange wonderful plays. I used to do scenes in high school drama from them. Helped me get through a crazy time. Superb.

  • I love the absurd and cultivate it daily wherever I am. From my point of view, this is brilliant, brilliant work and makes perfect sense. That may be the biggest part of my problem. Highly recommed this book!

  • i think my favorite from these was "the bald soprano." there was some pretty funny and interesting dialogue. but of course, it is the meaning behind that that matters...

Absurd is not my style. I found this frustrating and irritating to read. If it wasn't an assignment, I wouldn't have gotten through ti.

  • Ionesco uses a satirical approach in all of his plays; this causes the actual "points" of the plays to become less ostentatious than other political pieces because he's approaching it with humor instead of attacking people with his opinions.

  • I think every grad student would enjoy reading "The Lesson". The other plays in this collection are more esoteric, but they all have their moments. Ionescu has a brutal sense of humour and always manages to surprise.

I literally laughed out loud while reading The Bald Soprano. One of the most influential books/collections I have ever read.

  • It takes a canny eye... This man is a miracle to theater. Sometimes there's a code, but sometimes, there is nothing there but madness and the folly of a simple mirror and our day to day action and interactions reflected back at us. The Bald Soprano drives me crazy, The Lesson makes me laugh in true hysterics and The Chairs leaves me as melancholic and empty as the literal chairs are on the stage. Fascinating works!
