Virginia's chief medical examiner, Kay Scarpetta, is called in to examine the remains of a woman found in a landfill, her body dismembered in the same expert way shed seen before. And while Scarpetta is investigating, the bold killer contacts her through the Internet, inviting her to download the police photos, and signs off with the chilling name, deadoc. When Scarpetta and her niece discover that the victim was exposed to a rare smallpox-like virus before she died, she realizes that they're up against a killer with access to an incredible arsenal of deadly force and now its directed at her! not the best book out of the scarpetta series and it felt like a chore to finish. i was more concerned about what the characters were doing in their private lives than tha actual murders and how it was going to be solved (show less)

Definitely another top 5 Scarpetta novel. After the lagging ending of the last book I was wondering how good this one was going to be. Turns out the last book was just a hiccup because this was one of the best - or at least back on track. The details are always rich in her writing and you can’t help but turn the pages just to follow Scarpetta as she links all the murderous red herrings toward the culprit. The culprits aren’t always obvious; sometimes they’re characters that didn’t amount to much in the course of the novel. But this one was different in a sense that the culprit was familiar with Scarpetta, so it became interesting to see the double crossing within Scarpetta’s associates. My only complaint is that it’s sometimes hard to keep track with several of the secondary characters and their positions as Scarpetta jumps from place to place. State to state. City to city. Good book. Top 5. Ready for the next one… (show less)

This was an enjoyable read, although it got a little to emotional at times. I like the Scarpetta novels that focus more of the cases and less on the drama.
