The women of Freesia Court are convinced that there is nothing good coffee, delectable desserts, and a strong shoulder can’t fix. The women of Freesia Court are convinced that there is nothing good coffee, delectable desserts, and a strong shoulder can’t fix. Laughter is the glue that holds them together—the foundation of a book group they call AHEB (Angry Housewives Eating Bon Bons), an unofficial “club” that becomes much more. It becomes a lifeline. Holding on through forty eventful years, there’s Faith, a lonely mother of twins who harbors a terrible secret that has condemned her to living a lie; big, beautiful Audrey, the resident sex queen who knows that with good posture and an attitude you can get away with anything; Merit, the shy doctor’s wife with the face of an angel and the private hell of an abusive husband; Kari, a wise woman with a wonderful laugh who knows the greatest gifts appear after life’s fiercest storms; and finally, Slip, a tiny spitfire of a woman who isn’t afraid to look trouble straight in the eye.

This stalwart group of friends depicts a special slice of American life, of stay-at-home days and new careers, of children and grandchildren, of bold beginnings and second chances, in which the power of forgiveness, understanding, and the perfectly timed giggle fit is the CPR that mends broken hearts and shattered dreams.

Entertaining read, and not completely predictable. All women deserve friends like this. Generally, the ending of a book can make or break a novel for me, and this one ended on just the right note.

I have only two issues with this book. First, there were times when I wish there was more discussion about the novels the club was reading. I would have settled with the novel somehow tying into the story, but that wasn't the case. Of course, we get a hint of why the chapters list the book the club was reading at a given time, but that doesn't come up until the end of the book. Second, Slip's character, while strong and admirable for the most part, can be down right annoying. Her morals and standards are set so high and it can be almost impossible to live up to them. In fact, I believe that one of the reasons that she can have such a close relationship with her daughter is because Flannery is so much like Slip.

Other than that, the book is pretty good. It gives a good look at the evolution of a housewife through the decades. (show less)

Lorna Landvik has become one of my favorite authors. Her books are touching and funny and as the Publisher’s weekly reviewer seems to think an imitation of others, I disagree. Her style is similar but not an imitation. I like that style,

This book, it made me cry, and it made me angry. As I was reading I began comparing some of these women’s personalities to people I know. I also started thinking about who would play each character if they made this into a movie. I had trouble coming up with people to play each part. That’s another reason I found the book enjoyable, I sometimes think that books were written just to be made into a movie. I didn't feel like Angry housewives was written to become a movie, although it would be a good movie.
Although it is about friends who form book discussion group, and Landvik does give some of the titles and how they "housewives" create themes around some of the books for each meeting, it is not about books.
This was one of those books that made me sorry it had to end, I want to spend more time with these friends and find out what happens next in their lives. (show less)

A wonderful novel - I would not have picked it out on my own, but it was our bookclub read. Think Divine Secrets of the YaYa Sisterhood on high volume - much more in depth, complex, and involved. I loved sitting down and being sucked in to everyone's lives. Also a fair bit of mystery and suspense, along with taking the reader through 4 decades. I would recommend it to everyone! Despite it's title, this book is not a bunch of women sitting around "man-bashing." It's real life a... (show more)
