Elinor Mackey has lived her life in perfect order: college, law school, marriage, successful corporate career. But when she discovers that she and her podiatrist husband, Ted, can't have children, Elinor withdraws into her own world of heartbreak and anger. While Elinor
falls in love with the oak tree in their front yard, sleeping under it at night, Ted begins an affair with Gina, the nutritionist at their gym. Ted, who may be the only one who can help Gina and her son, suddenly finds himself in love with two women at the same time. In the tradition of Anne Tyler, John Cheever, and Tom Perrotta, Winston's second novel looks beyond the manicured surface of suburbia to a world of loss, longing, lust, and betrayal. (show less)

I finished this book last night and threw it in the garbage so no one else would ever waste their time with this particular copy. I loved Good Grief and thinks she writes really well but this story was just let's see how many crappy things can happen to characters who are pretty likable. Oh, and the main character, let's have bad stuff, more bad stuff, even more bad stuff and then really bad stuff, ta da, the end!
If you feel like reading this why not just create a bunch of paper cuts on your hands and pour lemon juice on them, same net result. (show less)

Usually i don't agree with other peoples reviews either i think their too harse or that they were horrible written when other people love them, but this book I agreed with the majority of people. The characters all really annoyed me, they are all weak human beings but in extremely obnoxious manners. Elinor was pining after a husband she knew didn't love her, Gina had a lack of self-esteem and had to feel a void with a man if you wanna call the guys she dated "men", and Ted couldn't ... Elinor was pining after a husband she knew didn't love her, Gina had a lack of self-esteem and had to feel a void with a man if you wanna call the guys she dated "men", and Ted couldn't figure out his head from his ass. I also found half the time that transitions were really rough in spots I had to re-read parts because the narrator would switch suddenly with no warning.. Overall don't waste your time.... This is a tightly-written, wry small novel that I just loved. The husband and wife protagonists are trying desperately to have children (three years of trying everything including three in vitro fertilization attempts) while watching their marriage unravel. They are attractive characters who try mightily not to hurt each other but they do. This may be my best read of the summer so far.
