Lestat. The vampire hero of Anne Rice’s enthralling novel is a creature of the darkest and richest imagination. Once an aristocrat in the heady days of pre-revolutionary France, now a rock star in the demonic, shimmering 1980s, he rushes through the centuries in search of others like him, seeking answers to the mystery of his eternal, terrifying existence. His is a mesmerizing story–passionate, complex, and thrilling.

Lestat is my favorite fictional character ever. He embodies every characteristic and personality trait I look down upon and personally strive not to possess. Lestat is smug, arrogant, flamboyant, charismatic, selfish, and narcissistic. Yet I find myself drawn to him like a moth to a flame, all the while knowing (and perhaps even relishing) my inevitable demise. Lestat is as deadly as he is beautiful.

The Vampire Lestat is one of my favorite books (and by far my favorite out of the Vampire Chronicles). It has a rich intricacy that most novels lack; it is built upon layer upon layer of symbolism and complexity that makes it quite an experience to peel back and expose the vampire we know of as Lestat. The first half is intriguing. The book opens at present day, the '80s: A mega rockstar mature vampire goes on world tours and is effortlessly cool because he IS goth. We explain his assent to becoming a vampire. Somehow I lose interest when he actually becomes a new vampire. It starts taking me an half hour to read one page at a time, or at least it seems that way. I force myself to go on a little longer, hoping for a jumpstart, and then give up completely. Maybe in another life, I'll finish this book. (show less)

It's so clever, Louis from Interview With the Vampire was a nice chap but he knew so little of what was unfolding around him. This book unlocks many of the secrets that Louis didn't understand whilst simultaneously introducing us to the true character of Lestat.

This is the type of book that makes me realize I love to read. Anne Rice did more to bring about the best characterization of vampires (yes, even the demented Irishman as Louis says in Interview-but a high bar nonetheless) that has ever been committed to the written page. But it is not just the historical vastness of her novel that is amazing. But it is not just the historical vastness of her novel that is amazing. This was Anne at her creative best, long before she descended into the pseudo-babble, quasi-feminist I am woman hear me roar crap of Queen of the Damned. No, this is truly epic storymaking. I did a review of Wicked that said the point of the story got lost with its moral relativism, but in this book, it serves only to strengthen the ambiguity of vampires, making them sad victims ratherthan the boogeymen of other tales. More like predators than monsters, but predators who are perfectly aware of their situations and the problem of living an immortal life. That is the strength of this story, is that Lestat, even more than Louis, is the man truly out of time. He cannot die, but he does not stagnate as the conversation with Armand in Paris shows. Lestat is the harbinger of the 20th and 21st Centuries with no more real precepts of good and evil, just what he is, a reflection of a world hopelessly lost in its own relativistic ways, I'm okay you're okay thing. And it also plays out to the corrosion that this ambivalent attitude toward morality will ultimately lead, and that is destruction. I loved the book and cannot recommend it more highly.
