Only a work of such searing, meticulously controlled brilliance couldprovoke such a wide range of visceral responses. Here is the incredible story of an imprisoned pedophile who is drawn into an erotically charged correspondence with a nineteen-year-old suburban coed. As the two reveal -- and revel in -- their obsessive desires, Homes creates in The End of Alice a novel that is part romance, part horror story, at once unnerving and seductive.

While the writing of this book is undoubtedly phenomenal, the subject matter is disturbing on a very real level. The prose moves fluidly and intelligently around a controversial storyline. The narrative is given from the point of view of a pedophile who has been incarcerated for over 23 years. I've never experienced a form of media that made sex look so unappealing. The character's intelligence, eloquence, and mild manners (for the most part of the storyline) entice you to feel some sort of compassion and empathy toward him. However, as the story develops, it becomes far more evident that this individual is not rehabilitative and morphs into the scariest monster imaginable. This wildly smart thriller takes a mind blowing look into the mind set of the sexually deviant. What is revealed there is possibly something you didn't want to see, but at the same time, the train wreck you can't stop staring at. (show less)

What the hell made me read this? While the book is absolutely brilliantly written, the subject matter is just absolutely disturbing. It's pretty much Lolita, combined with the graphic detail of something like American Psycho. If you like vivid, horrifying descriptions of anal rape, rimming, pedophilia, and other such things, this is the book for you!! But god-damn, this woman can write. (show less)

  • I hid the book from myself when I finished it because it was like an ominous presence I didn't want to see or have see me, chilling!

Awkward for sure, not something I wanted to explain to people. Definitely intriguing if slow at some points. Squicky, very much squick

Terrifying! You can't tear away from the page; you have to finish the sentence, paragraph, chapter... most likely the entire book in one night.

This book really fucked me up, but I highly recommend it.
