A twisting trail of bloodshed leads Pendergast and Constance to the maiden voyage of the Britannia, the world's largest and most luxurious ocean liner---and to an Atlantic crossing fraught with terror. Another excellent Pendergast novel. Aloysius and his ward Constance Greene head to a monestary in Tibet to study and seek peace from the events of the previous novel concerning Aloysius' brother, Diogenes. They come to find that a very rare and evil artifact has been stolen, and Aloysius has been tasked with getting it back. This takes him and Constance on a fabulous premier journey of a new luxourious ocean liner, fighting against forces beyond comprehension in order to retrieve the artifact.
I really enjoyed this story. At one point, I was surprised that Agent Pendergast was not immune to the effects of the ancient artifact. Also, the authors throw a nice little twist in the end, and now I am anxiously awaiting the next novel in the series.
I still say that I woud like to see an "ultimate showdown" between Agenst Pendergast and Harlen Coben's Win. They would make a formidable team if they ever had reason to come together. (show less)

I'm a big Pendergast fan so I eagerly dove into this book & soon discovered what a waste of paper this one was!!! MAJOR DISAPPOINTMENT!!! i hope that this is not indicative of the future works of DP & LC- so sad that this seems to be the pattern of many great authors once they become popular & seem to forget about the value of telling a great story! When I realized that this was the only one of Preston/Childs' Pendergast novels that I had not read, I added it immediately to my list. Suffice to say, the only disappointment is that I will now have to wait for another one!

In this story, Pendergast and his ward Constance visit a Tibetan monastery for a retreat. There, they are informed that a precious artifact has been stolen from the monks ... and the two of them set out to find it. As is the case with all of the other Pendergast novels, there are some supernatural implications in keeping the artifact out of the wrongs hands -- into which, naturally, it has fallen.

One of the things I love most about this series of novels is the amount of art history and cultural research that goes into them; "The Wheel of Darkness" does not disappoint in this regard.

Highly recommended for those who like a good adventure story with an edge. (show less)

(show less)
