Troy: Shield of Thunder (Trojan War Trilogy 2)
The second novel in David Gemmell’s bestselling Troy trilogy. Interlacing myth and history, and high adventure, this is epic storytelling at its very best.
War is looming, and all the kings of the Great Green are gathering, each with their own dark plans of conquest and plunder.
Into this maelstrom of treachery come three travellers: Piria, a runaway priestess nursing a terrible secret; Kalliades, a warrior with high ideals and a legendary sword; and his close friend Banokles, who... (show more)

Into this maelstrom of treachery come three travellers: Piria, a runaway priestess nursing a terrible secret; Kalliades, a warrior with high ideals and a legendary sword; and his close friend Banokles, who will carve his own legend in the battles to come.
Together they journey to the fabled city of Troy, where a darkness is falling that will eclipse the triumphs and personal tragedies of ordinary mortals for centuries to come. (show less)

This story mainly follows 2 minor characters from the 1st book, Kalliades and Banokles. Once again, the character evolution is excellent and Gemmell shows off how heroes really should be. Gemmell is not afraid to kill people and describe in gory terms just how they die.

This is the last book solely acclaimed to David Gemmell and it's a fine book. The next and last book in the Troy trilogy was finished up by Gemmell's wife Stella and I look forward to seeing if there are any stylistic changes. Sounds like she's been an uncredited co-author for awhile though so I suspect it'll be a satisfying conclusion to the series. (show less)

Very impressive, though not as much as the first in the trilogy. Of the major characters, Banokles is brilliant, but Kalliades is no way near as likeable as Argurios and Helilakaon doesn't encourage much empathy. Although I'm sure I'm not alone in thinking that Hektor is a truly excellent character.
The battle scenes are very good, and bar a few edges into the fantastical, it's a convincing depiction of how the Trojan war could have happened. Now to the main event and the final in the trilog... The battle scenes are very good, and bar a few edges into the fantastical, it's a convincing depiction of how the Trojan war could have happened. Now to the main event and the final in the trilogy - the siege of Troy... Looking forward to that one. Wonder how it ends... (show less)Already read

David Gemmell
He has done it again, the characters are fantastic, so rich and full and develop even more in the 2nd book, cant wait to start the third, what a shame he is no longer with us, we have lost probably the best fiction writer of our time.
