I'm giving it 4 stars, as I didn't hate the book. I did find that a lot of it was repetitive, but that _could_ just be because it was the first book and Diane really wanted to set the tone. It felt like every page had to mention the money problems of the catering business being shut down, the mother in law is an alcoholic, the ex husband is a jerk, the son's behavior is making her worry, and the young lady renting a room from her has become spacey. I figured out 2 big "keys" of the plot within the first two chapters, which is always annoying. The only thing I didn't figure out was the secondary person responsible for the entire situation.
Most of the characters in the book were quite annoying to be quite honest. They were cliche and stereotypical. The Doctors were suave and handsome and evil. The Doctor's wife (mother in law) was a lush. The girl who worked as the aerobics instructor was "angry and violent". The "Mountain Man" was reclusive and quiet. The cop was a knight in shining armor and didn't get spurned no matter how many insults were slung at him by the heroine.
Now having said that, I didn't hate the book. I'll give the second one a try and see how it goes before I decide to continue with the series or not. (show less)Already read

This is a fun series with appealing recipes. Barbara Rosenblat does a superb job as audiobook narrator.
