This mesmerizing first novel tells the epic journey of Lin, an escaped convict who flees maximum security prison in Australia to disappear into the underworld of contemporary Bombay, a hidden society of beggars and gangsters, prostitutes and holy men, actors and exiles. Accompanied by his guide and faithful friend, Prabaker, Lin searches for love and meaning while running a clinic in one of the city's poorest slums and serving his apprenticeship in the dark arts of the Bombay mafia. The keys to unlock the mysteries that bind Lin are held by two people: his mentor Khader Khan, mafia godfather and criminal-philosopher, and the beautiful, elusive Karla, whose passions are driven by dangerous secrets. Based on the life of the author, this extraordinary debut has the world of human experience in its reach. (show less)

This was one of my favorite books in years. I think the last time I read a book that I absolutely could not put down was years ago when I read Middlesex. I carried this book everywhere (which is something since it's 900+ pages) and read it whenever I had a free moment, often keeping myself up well past bedtime to continue reading.

This was one of my favorite books in years. I think the last time I read a book that I absolutely could not put down was years ago when I read Middlesex. I carried this book everywhere (which is something since it's 900+ pages) and read it whenever I had a free moment, often keeping myself up well past bedtime to continue reading.

This book is described as a "mostly autobiographical novel". Having completed it, I would love to know which parts were indeed products of the author's imagination and not part of his life experience. The colorful cast of character portraits painted by the author evoked real and strong emotion in me and since finishing the book, I have found myself thinking of them as if I knew them myself. The roller coaster of wonderfully touching moments and tragedy never seems to end in the life of this man, and I found myself loving and hating him for both his capacity to love and for his indifference to the effects his actions had on others, including those he loved. I highly recommend Shantaram to anyone with a sense of adventure and the ability to swallow the seemingly inconcievable as truth, or something close to it. This beautifully written novel will keep you captivated from the first page to the last. (show less)

an old friend told me once that really good books should always be shared and while i cant remember the exact words he said but his point was that keeping a really good book to yourself was almost like withholding knowledge and that wasnt fair to anyone. This is one of those books - its a big book and that scares a few people - but i shared this book around and around and eventually it didnt come back - i just hope its still going around somewhere :) and johnny depps going to be in the movie ...
