This was the only book I read at school and finished! The rest of the curriculum was terrible but this for me was the highlight. I made a big enough impact for me to read avidly after school and I still think of the book whenever the word nuclear is brought up.

I picked the book as it appeared to be the best of a bad lot. I ended up really enjoying the book. I found the story sad and raw in places. There were tense aspects and the way the characters resorted to base characteristics stood up well.

I will be buying another copy so I can refresh myself with the story soon. Though I don't know that the story will be as good 15 years later. (show less)

A book I have had on the shelf since I left school. I didn't read it as part of my English class but seem to have aquired it somehow! I can see why it is used widely in schools. There are many interesting themes running through it and essentially it is a good story that's very easy to read.

I thought the ending was brilliant, as she just turns her back on the whole of her known exsitance and sets out to look for life - following her dream. You know that she will get there! As for Mr Loomis... (show more)

I thought the ending was brilliant, as she just turns her back on the whole of her known exsitance and sets out to look for life - following her dream. You know that she will get there! As for Mr Loomis, I really wanted her to shoot him in the end after he came into her life and then made her survival a living hell.

There are very good moments of tension and great descriptions of the surrounding area. I liked how you felt for Ann when she was holed up in her tree and the sense of outrage you feel when she shares her stores with Mr Loomis even though he has taken over her family farm.

This book makes you wonder what you would do in Ann's situation and whether our teenagers in this era have the capacity and the wits to survive like she does. (show less)

  • This is one of those books I read as a young adult that made a big enough impression on me that I still think about it, what, like 20 years later. It seems like I was always thinking about nuclear war and similarly grim subjects at the time.

Anyway, I remember this book being sad, grim and lonely, but with a lot of good horror movie-like tension. I actually bought a copy recently with the hopes of rereading it, but, alas, that has not happened.

If you don't mind young adult fiction, you like survivalist themes, you dig female protagonists and whatnot, check it out. (show less)
