Inspiring, at first - every bit as inspiring as everyone else says, but it wears thin toward the end. Indeed, the longer I think about this book the more dramatically the core themes make me uncomfortable.
The obsession is clearly wealth, and though Mr. Hill tries to make his theory more broadly applicable by referring to loves, friendships and noble pursuits, none of these things sit as comfortably with his proposed methods as the pursuit of wealth does, and so the pursuit of wealth is inseparable from his attitude.
It is an interesting book, but if it weren't for the high praise heaped on it by entrepreneurs and businessmen the world over, I'd think of it as not much more than the usual "self help book".
Overall, it seems to me the worst sort of book; more than being a rubbish book with bad ideals, it is an uplifting and sympathetic book with bad ideals, and this means that people reading it without a defensively critical attitude could be duped into feeling that it could in fact be an instruction manual for happiness. Wow, this is an excellent book. Great advice by someone who has studied great leaders throughout history, and particularly successful businessmen and women. Though written originally over 70 years ago, I think its truths are timeless.

I particularly enjoyed his perspective on persistance, and the prevailing theme of the book, the power of our minds to control our success and destiny. I thought his chapter on sex, romance and love, and its influence on success very interesting, and his perspective on those themes was new to me. Good reading. Overall, I thought this book worth reading, and meditating on in many respects.
I would caution Christian believers though, that his philosophies, for the most part sound, also have some error in them when looked at from a Christian or biblical perspective. He misses the mark completely when talking about the end of life. As a Christian I completely disagree with him on that.
All in all, I would highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to succeed, particularly in business, and I think everyone should take the personal inventory at the end. Being self-aware is very important to all of us. (show less)Already read

This book focuses on the BE of the Be-Do-Have principle and is a must read in success and personal development literature. This original version is great, however I also recommend picking up the 21st Century version with updated commentary. It will include modern day examples as well as more detail on Napoleon Hill and the other people he mentions in the book. If you have the time, read the original Think and Grow Rich first by skipping the editor's comments and then go back and read in its entirety. If not you can read it all the way through from the beginning, as this updated version includes several updated and modern stories are extremely helpful including more background on Mr. Hill and his struggles to get the book published. He truly lived the principles he presents. Most all of this information is useful because it is based on sound principles. Since the book is lengthy, I also highly recommend the CD audiobook.
