The third and fourth books of Aristotle's Politics discuss the fundamental questions in political philosophy: the nature of citizenship, the purpose of the state, the role of law, the merits of various constitutions. The third and fourth books of Aristotle's Politics discuss the fundamental questions in political philosophy: the nature of citizenship, the purpose of the state, the role of law, the merits of various constitutions. Richard Robinson's volume was the first to be published in the Clarendon Aristotle Series, and it remains a model of its kind - a lucid and provocative Introduction, an accurate but readable translation, and concise and critical notes. For this reissue, David Keyt has written a Supplementary Essay, in which he surveys and develops some recent ideas on the main themes of Politics III and IV. He also provides an up-to-date bibliography. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

Dull, largely obvious and repetitive. Anyone quoting Aristotle should remember all the archaic opinions - especially on slavery.

  • Understand why the Greek conception of democracy and politics is radically at odds with modern political thought. Also an interesting analysis of several constitutions (notably Sparta and Carthage).

  • I have always wanted to read this book. However, there is a large portion of Politics that is mostly archaic and no longer relevant to the present political condition. Otherwise it is a very detailed and technical analysis of politics and political theories. Its depiction of different regimes is to the point and worthy to be read.
