If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor
Okay, so at least you're interested enough to pick up this book and look inside. I think you and I are going to get along just fine.
Life is full of choices. Right now, yours is whether or not to buy the autobiography of a mid-grade, kind of hammy actor.
Am I supposed to know this guy? you think to yourself.
No, and that's exactly the point. Bookstores are chock full of household name actors and their high stakes shenanigans. I don't want to be a spoilsport, but we've all been down... (show more)

Case in point: look to your left - see that Judy Garland book? You don't need that, you know plenty about her already - great voice, crappy life. Now look to your right at the Charlton Heston book. You don't need to cough up hard-earned dough for that either. You know his story too - great voice, crappy toupee.
The truth is that though you might not have a clue who I am, there are countless working stiffs like me out there, grinding away every day at the wheel of fortune.
If Chins Could Kill: Confessions of a B Movie Actor is my first book, and I invite you to ride with me through the choppy waters of blue collar Hollywood.
Okay, so buy the damned book already and read like the wind!
Best,
Bruce Campbell
P.S. If the book sucks, at least there are gobs of pictures, and they're not crammed in the middle like all those other actor books.

If Chins Could Kill was recommended to me by a coworker as a more accurate account of the cutthroat, bone cracking life of the generally glamourized "Hollywood" machine. As an actor, not a movie star (as Bruce is careful to define), this book truly gave me a good look at what committing to the actor lifestyle would look like, and I might be convinced to do it, if I didn't have other life commitments to meet. However, reading this book also provided me with grins and sniggers, and ... (show more)

However, reading this book also provided me with grins and sniggers, and the fact that I was reading the autobiography of one of his favorite actors ingratiated me to my husband and his friends, and impressed a few of my guy friends. :) I took great pleasure in relaying trivia about Evil Dead and Army of Darkness, and discovering that I had seen Bruce in a few televisions shows: Hercules, Xena, and Lois and Clark. I also entertained my husband by reading to him the "car gag" that Bruce and John played on Dave.
The addendum provided a look at the world of books much like the bulk of the book provided a wide perspective on the world of film. As an aspiring author, I found that piece as equally fascinating.
This is an excellent book to read for wanna-be actors, Evil Dead fans, men, and women who want to understand at least in part the appeal gory horror films present to their men. (show less)Already read

Wasn't quite what I expected, lots of background while skimping on the career. Other than the original Evil Dead most of Bruce's career is skimmed without the types of anecdotes I was expecting, especially on Army of Darkness and his weirder films. It definitely has its moments and I'm glad I read it, but it was far less entertaining than his commentaries.

If you're a Bruce fan or just interested in Hollywood tales you'll get something out of this book. It was written before Burn Notice and Jack of All Trades so the focus if certainly on stuff you've seen. Some good-natured joking with the Raimi brothers helps punch up the movie and television stories, particularly the tale of Sam Raimi's car.
Compared to other personal Hollywood tales this one starts out slow, picks up in the middle and kind of meanders to the finish line, but the better moments make it a recommendation. (show less)
