Lively, absorbing, often outrageously funny, Chaucer’s The Canterbury Tales is a work of genius, an undisputed classic that has held a special appeal for each generation of readers. The Tales gathers twenty-nine of literature’s most enduring (and endearing) characters in a vivid group portrait that captures the full spectrum of medieval society, from the exalted Knight to the humble Plowman.

This new edition includes a comprehensive introduction that summarizes some of the most important historical events and movements that defined the world of Chaucer and his pilgrims; two additional tales (Reeve’s and Shipman’s); introductions for each tale designed to prepare the reader for a better understanding and enjoyment of the tale; newly written and conveniently placed explanatory notes; and a new, more easily understood system for learning to pronounce Chaucerian Middle English. What can I say about a classic that hasn't been already said? This is a tough read so don't expect to breeze through it. I would read a story at a time and allow a lot of time to digest the poetic writing (as you should) and getting through the verse of yore. Chaucer was ahead of the game and nearly every tale told is worth the read in my opinion. I've read this book twice in my life cover to cover, but it's more like 4 or 5 times considering the tales I've reread over the years. Something that draws me to this book is how times are so different yet so much the same. So many of the tales are filled with 'moral of the story' subject matter revolving around theft, debauchery, lies, and good deeds. With centuries between Chaucer and I, I truly feel like he's someone from my time writing about how he thinks things were versus the story coming from someone in that day. (show less)

No, it's a flop!

Forced to read this for school. Maybe I resent it for that, but it's many hours of my life I will never get back.

  • Great stories, and I love the Middle English language. Be sure to get yourself a version with both the original and the translation, as you lose a lot if you only get the Modern English.

Old English made this a challenge, but I bought a modernized version that helped me know if I was reading the stories right! Some funny stuff in here though! Great tales!!! Give it a shot and don't be intimidated.
